We like Alicia Keys just the way she’s always been, but if she wants to be a “Brand New Me,” more power to her. The Girl On Fire played a stirring set for the iTunes Festival on Friday, comprised of past hits like “Fallin’” and several cuts from her new album, including the title track and “Not Even The King.” But best of all, she debuted the brand new song “Brand New Me.” More »

Coldplay, Taylor Swift & Alicia Keys Perform For ‘Stand Up 2 Cancer’

Alicia Stands Up
Great musicians performing for a great cause. What’s not to love? Last night’s Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon featured some of our favorite artists doing their most emotional material. Coldplay gave us a taste of “Paradise,” while Alicia Keys debuted her Girl On Fire piano ballad “Not Even The King.” Perhaps the most moving tribute, though, came from Taylor Swift, whose song “Ronan” was co-written by the mother of a young boy who succumbed to the disease last year. Alicia KeysGirl On Fire isn’t headed our way until late November, but after hearing the title tune, we’ve already got another track from the hotly anticipated LP. “Not Even The King” comes complete with a lyric video depicting artful illustrations of a tune that’s all about being rich in love: “They offer the world to have what we got, but I found the world in you.” Not even the king can afford a voice as lovely as Alicia’s on this sweet, sentimental track. The MTV Video Music Awards Get Ranked!
Welcome back to the Hype Index, our Soundbytes segment that manages to squeeze an entire week of music news into one very opinionated list. Stevie Wonder and Nicki Minaj started off September in hot water, while Madonna and Elton John reportedly hugged it out. The MTV Video Music Awards turned 28, but without Lady Gaga or Kanye West the show was seriously lacking in the water cooler moment department. Watch above to find out who earned our number one spot and who broke our hearts this week —  then read on to see exactly how these artists made the Hype Index.

2012 MTV Video Music Awards: The Best & Worst Moments

Despite all the big-name performers and presenters, the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday were generally underwhelming. There’s usually a singular “goosie” experience (for instance, Adele last year) or an instant headline (the Kanye interruption). But this year there were no such capital-M Moments. That’s not to say there weren’t some truly enjoyable moments. Head below to catch what we singled out as our five favorite and five least favorite parts of the show. More »

2012 MTV Video Music Awards: A Viewer’s Guide

By now you may have heard that the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards are taking place tomorrow night (Sep. 6) live from Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET. We know what you’re thinking: no way this year can live up to last year. The 2011 VMAs featured Lady Gaga‘s gender-bending theatrics, Beyonce‘s baby bump reveal, an interpretive dance tribute to Britney and oh yeah maybe you’ve heard of that singer Adele?

But to meet the challenge this year, MTV rolled out a stellar line-up of newcomers and veterans, plus a couple new categories — Best Electronic Dance Video and Most Share-Worthy Video. We don’t know what that second one means either. But we do know all the crucial information about this year’s show. Like the fact that the Fierce Five US gymnasts (remember them?) will be presenting an award, and it will probably be awkward, and we can’t wait. So read on for everything you need to know (and a few things you don’t) about this year’s VMAs. More »
