Chris Brown And Trey Songz Pay Homage To R. Kelly On “Songs On 12 Play”: Listen

Chris Brown teamed up with Trey Songz for “Songs On 12 Play,” a new song from Brown’s upcoming sixth album X (out September 16).

The match-up isn’t just arousing mood music, as to be expected from two young R&B stars. Instead, Brown and Songz weave in references to R. Kelly‘s singles off 1993 debut 12 Play (“Sex Me,” “Bump ‘N Grind,” “Your Body’s Callin’”), plus later hits like “Fiesta” and “Ignition,” in efforts to sound more explicitly adult.

If anything, “Songs On 12 Play” brings to mind how much Brown and Songz (who recently released his own sixth album, Trigga) owe to the still-controversial R. Kelly. Following a brief, almost forgettable stint with new jack swing, the raunchy R&B singer still manages to find new ways to surprise with his dreamy songs of explicit bedroom instructions, from sung-rapped vocals to truly outlandish metaphors.

Neither Brown nor Songz sound as impassioned in their tribute as R. Kelly would on his own, though “Songz On 12 Play” still sounds like an earnest effort. Hear the X song below. More »

Chris Brown And Ariana Grande’s “Don’t Be Gone Too Long” Surfaces: Watch

Don't Be Gone Too Long
Chris Brown‘s dance-pop duet with Ariana Grande, “Don’t Be Gone Too Long,” was announced last spring, before it was postponed due to Brown’s incarceration. Then the song appeared to have been scrapped entirely. (“My duet partner isn’t available at the moment to put the song out with me,” Grande had said.) A version without Grande will now appear on Brown’s sixth album X, out September 16.

Days before X‘s release, though, Brown released the “Don’t Be Gone Too Long” video that he directed months ago. While a previous teaser showed only him silhouetted in a dark room while dancing to the song, the full video isn’t as straightforward. In this storybook romance gone wrong, Grande plays a princess who falls in love with Brown. After the two are caught seeing each other, though, knights lock Ariana’s object of affection away in attempts to keep them apart. More »

Chris Brown Performs “X” And “Loyal” On ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’: Watch

'X' Marks The Spot
With the release of his long-delayed studio album X just days away now, “Loyal” crooner Chris Brown is making his rounds to promote the forthcoming LP.

Last night, Brown and his troupe of dancers hit the stage to perform title track “X,” as well as a bit of “Loyal,” to the frenzied and passionate screams from the studio audience. Dressed head-to-toe in all red, the singer alternated between belting out the emotional track at the mic and stepping back to deliver his signature high-energy choreography.

Although the performer hasn’t had too many live performances throughout this, erm, tumultuous era, he looked right at home performing on a late night stage once again.

Check out the performance up top, and let us know what you thought in the comments below. More »

Chris Brown Says He & Rihanna’s Relationship Will Stop Being Analyzed “When We’re Not Relevant”

For the publication’s latest cover story, Billboard nabbed the first formal post-jail interview with polarizing pop force Chris Brown. The chat happened in mid-August, a couple weeks before hip hop mogul Suge Knight and others were reportedly shot at Brown’s pre-MTV Video Music Awards party (is Breezy a magnet for utter darkness or what?), but despite that, he later issued a statement on the matter to the magazine.

“I realize that what I do for a living opens my life to public scrutiny and that I have a responsibility to everyone because of that exposure,” Brown stated. “I can say that I am only human and I have made mistakes. I can say that I try to live my life in the most true, honest way that I can. I am not perfect, no one is.”

Below, see his comments another controversial topic that seems destined to follow Breezy around for a long time: Rihanna. More »

Suge Knight Reportedly Shot At Chris Brown’s Pre-VMAs Party

Suge Knight, former Death Row Records CEO, was reportedly shot while attending Chris Brown‘s pre-VMAs party in West Hollywood’s 1 Oak. TMZ reports that Knight left the nightclub at 1:30 a.m. today (August 24) on his own, though was led by police to an ambulance and is currently undergoing surgery. Some sources say Knight was shot twice, others that he was shot six times.

The reasons why shots were fired is also still unknown. However, Brown seemed to confirm that shots were fired by retweeting TMZ’s report, then airing out his own feelings. “It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes,” the X star and VMA nominee said on Twitter. “Miss me with the bullshit!!!” More »

Chris Brown Debuts Diplo-Produced Album Title Track, “X”: Listen

X Marks The Spot
Chris Brown‘s X has been a long time coming, thanks to a seemingly endless string of pushbacks and legal troubles. But it really is coming, and to prove it, Breezy’s just debuted the massive, Diplo-produced title track from the upcoming LP.

The track kicks off slowly and pensively at first, similar to Usher‘s own Diplo collabo, “Climax.” “If you’re only as good as the company you keep then I’mma blame you for what they say about me,” he damningly croons. Synths start to build around the crooner’s melodic vocals, until it becomes an all-out electronic production: “I swear to God I’m moving on!” he angrily spits before the song dips into a heavy, very Diplo-esque sort of noisy “Express Yourself”-like breakdown. Breezy’s been burned — this is clearly not a love song.

Listen to “X” after the jump. What do you think about Chris Brown’s Diplo collabo? Let us know in the comments below. More »

Taylor Swift Was Super Nerdy On ‘The Tonight Show’: Morning Mix

:: Taylor Swift dropped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to announce her performance at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. While there, she took part in the popular Ew! segment and played a super nerd. It appeared to come easily. [Billboard]

:: Here’s an unexpected cover version. Chris Brown shared a unique interpretation of Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me”, which is currently sitting at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s different. [Spin]

:: This is really touching. The broadway cast of Aladdin honored the late Robin Williams with a huge singalong. Performer James Iglehart also reminisced about watching the Disney cartoon for the first time. [Death And Taxes]

:: Michael Cera has released a lo-fi folk album called True That. It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. The Arrested Development actor has appeared in videos for Islands and sang backing vocals for Weezer. [Stereogum]

Chris Brown Borrows Britney’s “Work Bitch” Pool For His “New Flame” Video: Watch

Chris Brown unveiled his “New Flame” video this afternoon (August 14) and my mind immediately wandered to Britney Spears“Work Bitch” extravaganza. Which is unusual because I’m still trying to forget that Britney Jean ever happened. It just so happens that both videos were filmed at the same luxurious pool (or a very, very similar one).

Only instead of CGI sharks and dazed choreography, Breezy serves umbrella twisting and a shirtless cameo from international sex symbol Rick Ross. Fellow collaborator Usher also makes an appearance but — let’s be real — all eyes are on Teflon Don. The concept, which was first used by Mexican duo Prima J, is eye-catching but surely Chris had other options. Particularly when the song is this good. Watch both (equally glamorous) videos after the jump. More »

DJ Khaled Teams Up With Chris Brown, Future, August Alsina & Jeremih For “Hold You Down”: Watch

Baby, You Smart
DJ Kahled, who is gearing up for the release of his eighth studio album I Changed A Lot, is known to roll with quite the eclectic posse. This time around is no exception. After dropping “They Don’t Love You No More” with rapper heavyweights like Jay Z, Rick Ross, Meek Mill and French Montana back in April, the “We The Best” beatsmith is now serving up his latest R&B single “Hold You Down,” which features Chris Brown, Future, August Alsina and Jeremih.

The Gil Green-directed visual is laden with the usual Khaled staples as the R&B all-stars serenade their ride-or-die baes over the track’s baby-making melody — a beautiful mansion, cigar smoke, and, of course, a lot of really sexy women.  What’s more, the super producer not only shamelessly plugs his “We The Best Sound” headphones, but also gets to show off his acting chops, which are hilarious to say the least.
