American Music Awards 2013: The Best & Worst Moments From The Show

You know what? I’m just going to go ahead and say it: I like the American Music Awards. They’re really not that bad! Sure, they don’t matter in any meaningful way, but year after year, they’re the most enjoyable out of any awards show: Less self-serious than the Grammys, not as zanily self-referential as the VMAs, more grown-up than the Teen Choice Awards, the AMAs have figured out the secret: Fill the show up with performances and don’t bother pretending like the awards mean anything. Not even Pitbull could ruin it, and Pitbull’s made a career out of ruining things (like otherwise good pop songs).

Still, of course, there were zeniths and nadirs, moments when not even the breathless pep of a Jennifer Lopez Kohl’s commercial (what will she do next?) could bring light back into my Sunday night. Here’s a breakdown of some of the best and worst things that happened last night.  More »

American Music Awards 2013: Review Revue

Wrecked
Katy “turned” Japanese. Gaga was Marilyn Monroe. Rihanna had a moment with her mom. Miley performed with a lip-syncing cat. And the important thing about the American Music Awards this year? Nobody twerked. After taking in all the showy performances and the list of winners from the 41st installment of this particular dog and pony act, we scrounged the Internet to see what critics were saying about the whole spectacle. Head below for our roundup of the blathering. More »

American Music Awards 2013: The Full List Of Winners

One of them was born in Tennessee and one now calls the Volunteer State their home. The other thing Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift have in common is that they were the big winners at the 41st annual American Music Awards, a shindig that went down at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre Live.

“Thrift Shop” upstarts Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who performed via satellite from their concert in Miami, went into the thing with the most nominations (six total). The duo wound up being recipients of the Best Rap/Hip Hop Album for their independently released The Heist.

But it was the Tennessee kids who took home most of the night’s honors; Timberlake for Pop/Rock Male Artist, Soul/R&B Male Artist and Soul/R&B Album (The 20/20 Experience), and Swift for the biggie, Artist Of The Year, plus Pop/Rock Female Artist, Country Album (Red) and Country Female Artist.

Also, “Diamonds” diva Rihanna was handed the very first AMAs Icon Award (by her mother, no less), because, well, she’s probably the most unstoppable force on the pop scene these days. RiRi also snagged the Soul/R&B Female Artist statue.

Justin Timberlake To Return To ‘SNL’ As Musical Guest For Jimmy Fallon-Hosted Episode

Justin Timberlake is set to perform on Saturday Night Live for the second time this year — so much for worrying about overexposure — on the December 21 Christmas episode. The superstar hosted and served as musical guest back in March to promote the release of The 20/20 Experience, and this time he’ll drum up publicity for the disappointing sequel as the show’s musical guest.

Disappointing album or not, though, a Timberlake performance is worth tuning in for. And considering his pal Jimmy Fallon has hosting duties, we’re likely to see JT pop up in a sketch or two (Barry Gibb Talk Show, please!). In fact, they’re already attempting to spitball ideas. Justin Timberlake Wants To Conquer Country Music Next

Justin Timberlake is a Tennessee Kid, and being a Memphis native means deep down, he has country music coursing through his veins. And he may one day give in to his instincts, based on what he said in a recent SiriusXM interview. (Bad news if you weren’t feeling “Drink You Away.”)

When asked about his dreams to be a country star, Timberlake said, “They’re still alive. I just did an interview earlier today and I said, ‘I’m America, that’s what I am’ – in all sense of the word. I grew up outside of Memphis, Tennessee, and I listened to country music, R&B music, classic rock… everything.”

This being JT, he’s not just aiming to dip his toes in the water, he wants to conquer country just as he did pop. “I still got my eyes on a Best Country Album. There’s time for that.”  So he has seemingly plotted the next phase of his career — we just have to wonder if he’ll bring Timbaland along for it.  More »

American Music Awards 2013: A Viewer’s Guide

It’s almost time for the bonanza of Best Of 2013 lists, and that means pop’s biggest stars have one last major platform to help them make their mark on the Year In Music narrative, via the American Music Awards. This year’s show, taking place November 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, boasts an impressive, if fairly homogeneous, roster of performers. Come to think of it, the lineup looks an awful lot like the one for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards — so maybe the monoculture is alive and well after all.

As is always the case with the AMAs, the hardware plays second fiddle to the performances, but one award in particular is worth paying attention to this time: Rihanna will be honored with the first-ever AMA Icon Award. Our guess is that it’s like Justin Timberlake getting the video vanguard award at the VMAs — sort of a worthy recipient, but also probably the result of an agreement to secure a performance from the star.

That’s just the tip of the hulking popberg that is the AMAs, though. On Sunday night, you’ll be inundated with blown-out setpieces, wild choreography, a smattering of lip-syncing and an endless stream of live tweets (speaking of, be sure to follow @idolator!), so you best be mentally prepared. That’s where our Viewer’s Guide comes in. Head below for a complete breakdown of what we can expect at the 2013 American Music Awards. More »

Justin Timberlake Talks Critics & Haters In ‘GQ’ Cover Story

Yikes! Justin Timberlake has an axe to grind with those of us who were underwhelmed by his latest album, The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2 and his recent film Runner, Runner. In his GQ cover story, he doesn’t mince words when it comes to describing his reaction to the reception: “I feel — literally — like a bunch of people just took a shit on my face,” he says. Oh! What a visually arresting simile.

Specifically, he took umbrage with the response from industry-centric publications like Billboard and Variety, asking rhetorically, “Where did all this vitriol come from? It’s mean. And I’m not cut out for it.”

He continued: “You sound like a dickhead… It just shocked me because, like, you’re trade magazines. None of your opinions count. And by the way, none of you can do it.” And moreover: “I grew up with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, so sometimes I find it funny that I’ve been able to acquire the patience it takes to be kind to people in our business. Because sometimes I just want to fucking kill everybody.”

Well! That settles that, sort of. More »

Justin Timberlake Adds Summer 2014 Tour Dates, Fueling Lollapalooza Headline Rumors

Justin Timberlake is making up for his six-year hiatus by becoming the most hardworking man in showbiz (for proof, check out his 2013 VMAs medley). In addition to releasing two albums this year, the superstar embarked on the Legends of the Summer tour with Jay Z, followed by a worldwide solo tour. And now Timberlake has extended the global trek, adding yet another North American leg for summer 2014 following a marathon of European shows.

This leg kicks off July 12 in Charlotte, makes its way up the Eastern seaboard and into Canada, then heads west and finishes August 11 in San Jose. As Consequence of Sound points out, there’s a nice little gap during the first two days of Lollapalooza (August 1 & 2), preceded by a couple dates near the festival’s home of Chicago, fueling speculation that he may have one of the festival’s headlining slots. And to think, back when JT was just a lil’ Disney star, Lolla was a bastion of alternative music. Thangs change, Mox.

Justin Timberlake Covers ’90s New Jack Swing Classic “Poison” At Brooklyn Show: Watch

Drink It Up
Justin Timberlake kicked off his 20/20 Experience Tour in Brooklyn this week, and at his Barclays Center show Wednesday (November 6), the superstar treated fans to a cover of Bell Biv DeVoe‘s era-defining “Poison.” The 1990 New Jack Swing staple had the entire arena singing along, but this was no cheap nostalgia thrill. JT fully channeled not just fans’ collective ’90s past, but his own, taking part in a choreographed dance breakdown with a couple of his Tennessee Kids backup singers which transported the whole arena right back to those boy band days that made Timberlake famous in the first place.

This totally makes up for any missteps on 20/20 – Part 2. Check it out up top. More »

Ilia Darlin Covers Jay Z And Justin Timberlake’s Summer Smash “Holy Grail”: Watch

ilia-darlin
Sippin' From The Cup
Ilia Darlin is rising LA-based, Greek-born pop star who broke through this summer with demented electro-anthem “We Do What We Like”. We invited her into the Idolator studio to belt out that song live but also asked if she would be interested in performing a cover and, somewhat surprisingly, she chose Jay Z‘s meandering Nirvana-sampling “Holy Grail”.

It represented something of a genre change for the dance-pop diva but she fearlessly tackled Justin Timberlake‘s vocal, showcasing the full extent of her talent and innate ability to rearrange songs. If you need any further convincing that Ilia belongs on your pop radar, watch her in action up top. More »
