Today marks the completion of a year-long musical journey
as Justin Timberlake
celebrates the release of The 20/20 Experience – 2 Of 2
. Despite being under the weather for the past week, Timberlake
is still on full-force promo and made an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show
. The singer performed his latest single “TKO”
with a great amount of energy that showed no signs of the singer’s illness.
Timberlake also sat down for an interview where he talked about his ‘NSYNC reunion at this year’s MTV VMAs, saying it was “just like old times.” Being the nice guy he is, the singer also surprised a few fans on the show.

With the release of Justin Timberlake
‘s The 20/20 Experience – 2 Of 2
today (September 30), we’ve now witnessed The Complete 20/20 Experience
. And ya know what, we’re glad it happened! The double comeback was an impressive achievement. Sure, it was self-indulgent and a little too ubiquitous at times, and by splitting the whole thing up into two releases it had a hint of that corporate cash-grab scent, but it was a worthy endeavor for JT and his fans.
That’s the big picture. But when you zoom in on Volume 2, that’s when some weaknesses emerge. For me, at least. In our Idolator review, I argued the album was plagued by stale Timbaland beats and some of the worst lyrics in Timberlake’s career. Despite the fact that there were a few excellent tracks to be found, I concluded that “it’s the first real blemish on JT’s catalog, and more than disappointment, The 20/20 Experience – 2 Of 2 elicits frustration, because it was so unnecessary.”
I was pretty rough on the album, but several reviewers fell in love with JT all over again with this installment. Check out the roundup of reviews below. More »
Been listening to the stream
of Justin Timberlake
‘s The 20/20 Experience — 2/2
on a loop? Need even more JT in your life? Well, perhaps it’s time to treat your ears to the blockbuster sequel’s Target bonus track. “Electric Lady” (not a Janelle Monae
cover) is a slinky, bass-heavy slow jam than finds the mega-selling crooner in a romantic mood.
“You’re reaching my heart fast, you’re searching for something,” sings Justin before explaining “that’s just how electricity behaves.” As usual, Timbaland‘s production is multi-layered, occasionally overbearing but never boring. Listen after the jump. More »
With The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2
dropping next Monday (and streaming now on iTunes
), Justin Timberlake
is once again in full promo mode. He stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live
last night (*gasp* he cheated on Fallon!) to perform “Take Back The Night
,” his current single “TKO
” and a bevy of other hits. Donning his signature fedora, JT and the Tennessee Kids transformed Hollywood into a disco fete.
After his 15-song mini-concert (that can be viewed in its entirety on Myspace — obviously), the singer sat down for a funny interview, where “Doctor Kimmel” tried to diagnose a sick Timberlake. He also talked about his nerves before playing in front of Paul McCartney, his dreams of playing in the NBA and of course his upcoming album, calling it the “slutty” half to part one’s “virgin.”

conquered the charts and ushered in a new era of R&B with The 20/20 Experience
, so expectations are understandably high for the blockbuster’s speedy sequel. The good news is that the second installment maintains the quality of the first. Timbaland
takes over production duties again but he’s in a more experimental mood this time around. The super-producer has already proved that the world was crying out for classy, old school R&B, so he lets go of the reigns and mixes things up.
There’s lavish splashes of disco, meandering breakdowns and voiceovers that wouldn’t sound out of place on Michael Jackson‘s Thriller. Highlights include the Soul II Soul-inspired opener “Gimme What I Don’t Know (I Want)”, slick club-banger “You Got It On” and sexy Drake collaboration “Cabaret”.
The album occasionally gives into excess (“True Blood” needs to be cut in half) but it’s easy to forgive when there are so many other gems to choose from. More »
Most artists visit the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge
with the intention of putting their own spin on a contemporary hit. Robin Thicke
memorably turned Icona Pop
‘s “I Love It”
into a soulful ballad, while Bastille
transformed Miley Cyrus
‘ “We Can’t Stop”
into a haunting rock anthem. Justin Timberlake
takes a different path. He performed an unusually faithful rendition of The Jacksons
‘ classic 1978 disco hit “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)”.
It’s great to see Justin leave his suit and tie at home and just have fun. He turns the studio into a nightclub, line-dancing with his band on stage while rocking a white t-shirt and black hat. As usual, his vocal is on point and the 32-year-old’s stagecraft can not be denied. JT had the entire crowd on their feet! Slip into your disco finery and watch up top. More »
Just like with his spring release The 20/20 Experience
, Justin Timberlake
opts for a more “classic”-sounding JT & Timbaland
tune for the second single off The 20/20 Experience: 2 Of 2
. The only difference being that “TKO” stands as more of a dark mid-tempo jam than the sweet, award-winning “Mirrors,”
both lyrically and musically.
“TKO” switches gears from previous, Michael Jackson-leaning single “Take Back The Night” and details a woman — compared here to a boxer going “for the gold” — who has done Timberlake wrong. As far as the instrumentation goes, Timbaland and J-Roc lay a bed of familiar synths below Justin’s vocals that aren’t dissimilar to the ones in the singer’s past singles “Cry Me A River” and “Summer Love.”

has been teasing fans all morning with cryptic
. After a couple of promises to share new material, the 32-year-old finally came through — posting a snippet of the next single from The 20/20 Experience — 2 Of 2
. He forgot to tell us the title but from the lyrics — “can’t fight no more, you knock me out” — it’s not unreasonable to assume the track is called “TKO”.
From the 15 (or so) second preview, the bass-heavy banger sounds like another Timbaland-produced party-starter. It’s definitely more slick and than the disco-referencing “Take Back The Night”. Listen to JT’s latest after the jump.
is hinting that he may release a new single
from The 20/20 Experience – 2 Of 2
today (September 19), but one thing we know
he will do is debut more new songs from that album live this weekend. Timberlake is headlining the second night of the iHeartRadio Music Festival on Saturday in Las Vegas, and he told On Air with Ryan Seacrest
that he plans to use the gig to unveil a handful of songs live for the first time.
“I have not put the set list together yet because, as you know, I procrastinate on things like that, but we are looking at playing some new material from the second half of this record,” he told Seacrest. “So I’m excited for people to hear it.” More »
