timeIt’s been quite the high profile week for The-Dream. Not only did a wedding photo of the hit-making songwriter-producer and Christina Milian just surface, his Love vs. Money was also singled out in Time‘s picks for the top albums of the year. Hopefully this calms him down after his recent Grammy snub.

Dirty Projectors, a favorite of Solange Knowles, ranked pretty high on the list, as did Lilith Fair 2010 performer Miranda Lambert.

Lady Gaga just managed to scrape in at #10 with The Fame Monster, and the publication notes “there’s still a little too much filler for global domination to be a real goal. But the hits… are towering and undeniable.”

Hop below the jump to see the 10 albums that Time magazine felt were worth their salt in 2009. More »

ffmqotsaHoly wow: Looks like Dave Grohl and Josh Homme are doing something together in Chicago next Sunday, at midnight, at the not-all-that-large Metro. Tickets go on sale this Thursday at 10 a.m. CT. Is there any way to camp out on the Internet? Because I would recommend doing so, if you want to get a ticket to this particular performance. It Is Time To Usher In A New Era Of Jock Jams

jock-jams-album-cover1Now that the Carolina Hurricanes have been eliminated from the NHL playoffs, Merge Records impresario Mac McCaughan has moved on from chronicling the ‘Canes’ efforts to talking about the music that arenas employ to get fans in prime freak-out mode. In 2006, he brought some albums put out by his label down to the Hurricane home base, RBC Center, in hopes of breaking through what he called its “particularly stultifying mix of Top 40 / Classic rock / Emo (? i don’t know what to call some of the songs on there) / Sports Disco,” and it worked, at least a bit; “Punch Me Harder” got played during the 2006 NHL Finals, which–coincidence?–the Hurricanes won. Anyway, McCaughan has provided his own suggested playlist for hockey arenas to the local paper, and man, is it so much better than the nu-metal and snipped bits of Eurodance that I’m used to at my sporting events. Hey, Warner Brothers: Who’s Your Target Market For “Covered”?

Warner Brothers Records is celebrating its 50th year as a label with an album of current artists covering classic cuts from the label’s archives, and while I suppose there’s some appeal to hearing Taking Back Sunday play a Tom Petty track, let’s be real: Who is going to pay for that privilege in the Internet age?

Live Nation’s Latest $10 Ticketing Day: Long Island Metalheads, Where Have You Gone?

5139637.jpgContinuing its fun practice of temporarily discounting concert tickets in the hopes of getting butts into its venues’ seats, Live Nation has sent out an e-mail to New York-area mailing list subscribers touting its “Summer Concert Stimulus Package,” which cuts the ticket prices for select shows to $10 for one day only and which I would have called the “Business Sucks Sale,” because, c’mon, that’s a lot funnier and more honest. (And here’s the obligatory note that the “convenience” charges added to the tickets after the fact nearly double the listed price, but that little piece of info isn’t any fun to pass along, now, is it?) Among the shows are the Slipknot-headlined Mayhem Festival, which also includes Mastodon and Underoath on its bill; Judas Priest shows at both Jones Beach and the PNC Bank Arts Center; some sort of Opie and Anthony-sponsored “comedy” show; and bills that include both Poison and Sebastian Bach. The full list of shows after the jump.
