Coldplay were the big winners at today’s Q Awards, presented in London to an audience that supped from ham hock terrine, Barolo-braised rump of lamb, and mango-raspberry trifle, as well as “an endless flow” of the vodka sponsoring the whole affair. Perhaps that dinner could be seen of as something of a last hurrah for an ever-imploding planet, or maybe the folks at Britain’s dad-rock digest were merely hoping that said ever-spewing vodka would bring a moment of clarity in which the difference between the “Q Icon,” “Q Idol,” “Q Innovation In Sound,” “Q Inspiration,” and “Q Legend” awards would finally be realized. I’m sober right now, and I certainly can’t figure it out. Today’s completely dubious claim about why an arm of the music industry might be hurting comes from Wired‘s Scott Thill, who wrote in response to R.E.M.’s new, ad-agency-created video for “Man-Sized Wreath”: “Music videos aren’t dead, they’re just dying, and they’re dying because of bloated videos like ‘Everybody Hurts.’ When fans can use their favorite songs to make their amateur films without fear of losing their comparatively miniscule cookie jars, then the new age of promotional video will be here at last.” Say what?
Hey indie label owners, a bit of advice: When you lose an artist to a major label, make sure you get that major label to slap your logo on all of that artist’s future product. Cuz if they forget, as Sony did with the tiny Ohio label that discovered Meat Loaf, you’ll probably be able to afford that beach house after all.
Rumors of Meat Loaf’s retirement–you know, the ones that he started last week?–are apparently completely exaggerated, although he is canceling the remainder of his European tour in order to get a cyst that’s developed on his vocal cords taken care of. More »
Judging by the events that transpired at his concert on Wednesday night, it would appear that larger-than-life singer Meat Loaf has quit music–and true to form, he’s done it in the most dramatic way possible, stopping a show midway through to announce his retirement from the rock life before leaving the gig in an ambulance.
