Despite the unfortunate circumstances that lead to some major artists pulling out of the 2010 Lilith Fair, the show must go on. Last night the “Celebration Of Women In Music”, set up camp in Indianapolis. The femme festival included Miranda Lambert, Dixie Chicks Martie Maguire and Emily Robison’s side project Court Yard Hounds, Mary J. Blige (who gave performed her amazing cover of “Stairway To Heaven”) and of course, Sarah McLachlan. Flip through to see all the Lilith action you missed, or for those of you in Detroit consider it a sneak preview for the performances you’ll be getting later today. It’s been quite the high profile week for The-Dream. Not only did a wedding photo of the hit-making songwriter-producer and Christina Milian just surface, his Love vs. Money was also singled out in Time‘s picks for the top albums of the year. Hopefully this calms him down after his recent Grammy snub.
Dirty Projectors, a favorite of Solange Knowles, ranked pretty high on the list, as did Lilith Fair 2010 performer Miranda Lambert.
Lady Gaga just managed to scrape in at #10 with The Fame Monster, and the publication notes “there’s still a little too much filler for global domination to be a real goal. But the hits… are towering and undeniable.”

It’s been eleven years since the last Lilith Fair toured the country, and it’s interesting to note who’s still making relevant music over a decade later: past performers Sheryl Crow, Tegan & Sara (they played one date of the last incarnation), Erykah Badu, The Indigo Girls and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan are all coming back for the return of the ladies-only music fest. (Paula Cole and Meredith Brooks, however, are still MIA.)
The newcomers include top names from across the spectrum: soul songstresses Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott (and pop-soul android Janelle Monae), country firecrackers Sugarland and Miranda Lambert and pop dolls such as Sarah Bareilles and the ever-so-quotable Ke$ha. (Who wants to be the one to tell her Jack Daniels isn’t a sponsor?) Check out the first group of artists on the lineup after the jump. More »
Popping in on this Labor Day to say that if you missed me chatting with National Public Radio’s Guy Raz yesterday about five albums to look forward to this fall—including this Friday’s release of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, as well as albums by Miranda Lambert, Annie, the Roots, and Hope Sandoval—you can hit up NPR’s Web site to hear it. And feel free to tell me what you thought I forgot! Time constraints, you know. [NPR] More »
The folks at industry rag Hits have a handy chart of the albums coming out in the last months of the year, which, who knows, may be the last one in which a chart like this is even necessary! But even though we’re a long way from the days of 50 Cent and Kanye West squaring off on the anniversary of 9/11, it’s still sort of fun to see what CDs will be landing at America’s retailers on the same day. After the jump, five of the best battles that could arise from the coming release-date schedule. (Marketing departments, get your beef stew recipes ready!) More »
As promised: The state of my “2009 awesomeness” playlist, in which I collect the songs that catch my ear as the year progresses in order to not make my best-of list a last-minute-of-December clusterfuck sort of thing. (It inevitably winds up being like that, but you know, I have noble intentions.) It’s after the jump, and has some contextual links added in. Feel free to make your own and share it here! More »
