People unveiled a sampling of its Top Sexiest Men Alive today (led by Johnny Depp, sooo boring a choice—what, were Brad Pitt and George Clooney busy?) and a few pop stars made the list. But they aren’t exactly who we would’ve selected: More »
In an effort to keep everyone’s name in the gossip columns set the record straight about his prior involvements with Mariah Carey, Eminem has released “The Warning,” a few minutes of invective pointed directly at the floundering singer and her semi-courageous husband Nick Cannon, who have been acting cute about whether the Mimi-crazed guy played by Mariah in her video for “Obsessed” is actually supposed to represent one Marshall Mathers. It would seem as if Em isn’t really believing their denials! “The Warning” talks about the trajectory of Mariah and Em’s “relationship” (complete with self-mockery over his sexual prowess), drops in coos from a Mimi soundalike, and throws down a few threats over the release of photos and voicemails that would apparently prove that the two were an item for a while, contrary to Carey’s assertions. Mariah Carey’s Brett Ratner-directed video for her new single “Obsessed,” in which she dons the dude gear at left, will continue the trend of videos debuting anywhere but a music-related channel this Wednesday when it premiere’s on the NBC summertime crapfest America’s Got Talent. Why would Carey choose that particular program to launch her new album—its high ratings? The possibility of making David Hasselhoff weep with joy because of what will no doubt its raucous, drag-related humor? More »
In order to celebrate America, Idolator will be taking tomorrow off. But before we close things out, here are a few stories we missed during this verifiably insane week:
• Hey, look! An entire AP story speculating about who might fill London’s O2 Arena in the wake of Michael Jackson‘s death that includes a) some Sun-sourced speculation about an ABBA reunion and b) the following fan reasoning for why Whitney Houston should perform instead: “”because they suffer the same pain and deal with the same demons: drugs.” Ay yi yi. [AP]
• To continue Great Moments In Quotes, here’s Nick Cannon on the speculation that his wife Mariah Carey is going to use her forthcoming video for “Obsessed” as a way to lampoon Eminem: “My wife doesn’t beef. She’s Mariah Carey. She’s not beefin’, she’s a vegetarian.” [MTV] More »
So in response to/as a way of giggling over Jay-Z’s musical rant against AutoTune, a new blog counting off the reasons that the vocal-manipulation technique should be abolished has started. It already has eight reasons, including its opening the door for a potential robot takeover and manipulated Bible verses! It also takes on one of the people that Jay absolved because of his ability to write a melody, which I’m sure he’ll quibble with, but at least it’s funnier than Wyclef Jean’s Nick Cannon-assisted parody of the blipped-voice genre. When Eminem’s Relapse leaked a week and a half ago, Nick Cannon–the teen idol who grew up to become Mariah Carey’s husband–took exception to the song “Bagpipes Over Baghdad,” specifically the part where… well, let’s just say that calling Cannon a “prick” and his wife a “fucking whore” wasn’t the best idea. Cannon wrote a lengthy blog post taking Em to task, calling him a racist and saying that he would be “coming at [Eminem] hard body.” The threat would have been awesome, had Cannon not decided to take the post down a few days later. Anyway, Eminem has finally responded to the online kerfuffle, telling an interviewer that his intention was not to have the Wild N Out host start “wildin’ out” (see what he did there?)–as is the case with much recent Eminem, “Baghdad” was just the result of him spazzing out over another long-ago slight: More »
A few hours after Eminem’s Relapse leaked, Nick Cannon got wind of the record, and downloaded it… only to find that he was actually one of Marshall Mathers’ targets, thanks to his being married to former target of Em’s affections Mariah Carey. In response, Cannon fired off about 1,400 words on his blog saying that the song “Bagpipes From Baghdad” irrevocably proved that Eminem was a) jealous; b) racist (because Carey is “the same racial mixture as our beloved president Barack Obama”); and c) saddled with a haircut that made him look like a cross between McLovin, a Nazi, and Liza Minnelli.
