Well, this breathless British-tabloid report about a “reunion” between the 9/11 conspiracy-theorizing pop star and the boy band that helped vault him to fame seems to be based on all of them going out to dinner together in New York City, and Williams later being pap-spotted in the vicinity of New York’s Electric Lady Studios. Who knows whether it’ll result in any recorded material, or just more frothy speculation from across the pond—but hey, any limp excuse to post the video for the group’s 1995 single (and lone hit in America) “Back For Good” is OK by me! I have no idea how the lyrics “All we’ve ever wanted / Is to look good naked / Hope that someone can take it” are supposed to tie in with 9/11 conspiracy-theorizing, but in the twisted mind of pop genius Robbie Williams, the two are linked irrevocably. Maybe I need to listen to his new single “Bodies” some more! Or maybe I got confused because of pressure from his label, who, when made aware of the thematic bond, advised Williams against turning the song’s zoomtastic video into 9/11 Was An Inside Job: Now With A Super Catchy Chorus: More »
The video for Robbie Williams’ Trevor Horn-produced comeback single “Bodies” is out, and it follows a pretty simple storyline: Williams is trying to get out of the desert, first by motorbike (which runs out of gas), then by car (which just so happens to be driven by a pretty lady, who gives him some company once night falls), then by plane (during which he flouts safety regulations and engages in a little bit of two-stepping on the wing). Interesting that despite the desert setting and the lyrical lamenting of just wanting to look good naked, Williams is clad pretty fully for most of the video. (Oh well!) Clip after the jump. More »
Robbie Williams’ Trevor Horn-produced comeback single “Bodies” has been unleashed on the world, and as the collection of words at the beginning of this sentence might suggest, it’s a lush, confident pop song that touches on early-millennial narcissism and ends with a gospel choir singing about just who Jesus died for. There’s even a bleeped word! Stream after the jump. More »
Robbie Williams will release a new single (“Bodies,” on Oct. 12) and album Reality Killed The Video Star, Nov. 9) this fall, and it’s not a moment too soon, what with Lady GaGa’s overly defensive, oddly tuneless brand of “doing it for my art” not really filling the void as far as “self-aware pop stars who also happen to make banging tunes” go. And the whole shebang will be produced by former Buggle Trevor Horn, thus linking the ex-Take That member to t.A.T.u., Belle & Sebastian, and Yes. Awesome. [Popjustice] More »
The new single by American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is his take on Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” and the song is actually quite well-suited to Archie’s voice. (Honestly, the more I hear him singing normal pop-song material, the more I think that my aversion to him was rooted in the Up With People-like songs he sang during the competition.) Listening to this cover made me think that Archie would be smart to work with a producer who may fall outside of his dad’s comfort zone, but who helped create an album that had a measure of success this year…
