Selena Gomez clearly doesn’t believe in resting on your laurels. After generating an avalanche of praise for her emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards, the 22-year-old would be forgiven for taking a minute to soak up the triumph. Instead, she’s already in the studio working on her next album. And the baby-faced diva is using her current hit single as a reference point.
“It’s exciting for me to start off with something like ['The Heart Wants What It Wants']” she revealed in a radio interview. “And then start leading into writing about all the other things that are going on in my life and have gone on in the past year or so.” It’s obvious that Selena is taking a very different approach for her first project with Interscope Records. “I’m excited to put more of my heart and soul into the next chapter of music.” The LP, which is expected to drop mid-2015, is shaping up to be a blockbuster. The 2014 American Music Awards, a.k.a. one of the biggest nights in music, aired yesterday (November 23) live from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater! The three-hour telecast was jam-packed with major honors (like Taylor Swift winning the Dick Clark Award For Excellence) and fun performances from everyone’s favorite artists — including Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez and many more!
One Direction had the best night ever, taking home three awards for Favorite Band, Duo or Group; Favorite Pop/Rock Album with Midnight Memories and Artist of the Year. But what did other critics think were the biggest highlights from the 2014 AMAs? Find out after the jump! More »
Justin Bieber once described Selena Gomez as “the most elegant princess in the world” and it’s hard to disagree with his assessment given her stunning appearance at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles tonight (November 23). She oozed glamor in a figure-hugging, floor-length, backless black gown. (What a mouthful!) The 22-year-old added a flash of drama/color by wearing chunky gold earrings and bracelets.
Sel will perform new single “The Heart Wants What It Wants” for the very first time during the show. She already admitted to being nervous about singing the very personal song on Instagram but the former teen queen will, no doubt, get moral support from friends Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding. The Rock Mafia-produced break-up anthem is the first (and probably only given that her contract with Disney is up) single from her greatest hits compilation For You (due November 24). More »
Taylor Swift is in Los Angeles for the American Music Awards on Sunday night (rumor is she’s opening the show) and took the opportunity to hang out with occasional BFF Selena Gomez and British electro-pop diva Ellie Goulding. They decided to have a girls night out and hit up The 1975‘s gig at the Hollywood Palladium. As expected, they all documented the get-together on their various Instagram accounts.
The “Blank Space” hitmaker posted a collage of photos as well as a video of her and Selena singing along to the band’s 2013 hit “The City”. Ellie also got in on the act, sharing a pic of the trio (above) on her Instagram. It’s going to be a busy couple of months for the pop princesses. Taylor is in full promo mode for chart-busting LP 1989, while Sel is gearing up to release her greatest hits package For You. As for the Brit? Her new album drops early next year. See their party snaps and a video after the jump. More »
Selena Gomez embraces her sexy side on “Do It” — the second new song on greatest hits compilation For You. (The first, of course, being rising hit “The Heart Wants What It Wants”). Another Rock Mafia production, the slinky bedroom anthem is cute and catchy bop that proves the 22-year-old is all grown up. “Sitting on my bed with just your t-shirt on,” Sel coos before reaching the bubbly chorus: “If I had a choice, if I had my way, boy you know we’d do it every single day.”
Well, then! It’s definitely a change of pace from the compilation’s surprisingly raw and gritty lead single but “Do It” is pretty irresistible and deserves its spot on For You. Selena will perform “The Heart Wants What It Wants” for the first time on Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards. The track is steadily gaining momentum on radio and iTunes and is shaping up to be one of the biggest hits of her career. Listen to her new song after the jump. More »
We all know Sia can swing from a chandelier, but did you know she’s also pretty good with a golf club too?
Filmmaker Erik Anders Lang, Sia’s husband, is working on an ambitious new project called Be The Ball, a film that traces the origins of golf while also exploring the various mental techniques one can use to enhance their game. Or, as he describes it: “The first documentary about golf and spirituality…ever.”
To fund the film, Erik has started a Kickstarter, and he’s calling on a few of his famous pop friends — including Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Joe Jonas and, oh yes, his wife as well — to help him rally support. Check out the hilarious celeb-filled Kickstarter video, and find out how Sia is involved with the campaign after the jump. More »
Selena Gomez shocked a lot of people when she returned to the music after an extended break with gritty break-up anthem “The Heart Wants What It Wants”. The Rock Mafia-produced anthem proved to be an instant success — selling 100,000+ downloads in its first four days of release. That was enough to debut at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not bad for a deeply personal song that was dropped with no forewarning or promotion.
The 22-year-old will perform the bad boyfriend-referencing anthem for the first time at the American Music Awards on November 23. Sel has been busy preparing for the hit’s live debut and posted a pic from rehearsals on Instagram this afternoon (November 17). “Rehearsing for the AMAs,” she wrote told her 17.7 million followers (of whom Justin Bieber is no longer one). “Wasn’t prepared for how nervous Id be, I mean I’ve done this before. But now it’s just me. All of me.” See Selena’s Insta update after the jump. More »
Justin Bieber did the unthinkable by today (November 12) by unfollowing Selena Gomez on Instagram. That’s the millennial equivalent of throwing your ex’s belongings on the street or letting the air out of their tires. In other words, R.I.P. Jelena. I guess Cody Simpson‘s duet partner really didn’t like the sentiment of Sel’s emotionally confronting new single.
Well, it’s Justin’s loss. As anyone with a phone knows, the For You diva’s Instagram is one of the world’s seven wonders with pic after pic of absolute perfection. I’ve pull together 10 of the 22-year-old’s cutest pics to remind the “Confident” hitmaker exactly what he’s missing. In other Selena news, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with 100,000+ downloads sold in its first four days of release. More »
Welcome to Friday, Idolator readers! It’s been an especially zany week in pop, from Selena Gomez‘s unexpectedly emotionally devastating (and possibly Justin Bieber-referencing) “The Heart Wants What It Wants” to the release of Calvin Harris‘ Motion, to the pushback of the new Fifth Harmony album (ugh) to the shocking Beyoncé-style surprise album drop from Miss Azealia Banks. It’s really just like Ellie Goulding sings: ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN!
Plus, Taylor Swift notched the year’s first ever million-selling record with 1989, Beyoncé announced a BEYONCÉ re-release and Rihanna stripped down for a seriously fierce shoot for Esquire UK. As always, you guys had plenty to say. Check out the week’s best comments after the jump. More »
