“But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be. To my fans, I sincerely apologise and I hope you guys know how much each and every one of you mean to me.”
Australia is a tough market for pop acts (just ask Ke$ha and Pitbull), so her inability to sell out arenas is nothing to be ashamed of. But her excuse is worrying. The “Slow Down” diva was extremely out of sorts at Jingle Ball, is yet to release a third single from Stars Dance despite coming off another huge radio hit and now decides she needs to take time out to reevaluate her life. While shade throwing and open letters (hello Sinead O’Connor!) can be hugely entertaining, most of these encounters have ended badly. Just look at Azealia Banks, who could well be the first person to commit career suicide by Twitter. See the year’s 10 most memorable beefs after the jump. More »
As with many things in life, it’s good to get a second opinion. The 21-year-old was a changed woman at the Seattle show. For starters, that unflattering Louise Brooks wig was discarded — and hopefully incinerated — in favor of her own long locks and she delivered consummate performance. The highlight was an adorable stripped back version of 2010 hit “Naturally”, which showcased her sweet live vocals. Watch up top. More »
After the mic kept cutting in and out throughout her set, she shouted, “What the fuck!” to an audience full of children during an unfortunately-timed moment when the thing was actually working. Understandably, then, after performing “Come & Get It,” she cut her set short and headed offstage. While she looked great (as per usual), by the time she hit that song, she was clearly pretty over it — check how she doesn’t even bother to try and sing along to the backing track at 0:59 in the video up top. While the event flowed smoothly and delivered no shortage of highlights, it also had a couple of dramatic moments due to audio issues and a very public meltdown from one diva having an awful day at the office. The thing is — those blips just upped the entertainment level. In addition to great music, fans also had something to talk about between performers. But more about that later.
An out of place Travie McCoy kicked off Jingle Ball 2013 with a bunch of relatively stale hits, while an unexpected cameo from Neon Hitch just left people confused. Next up was Danish indie-pop band New Politics, who impressed with an electric live set built around breakthrough hit “Harlem”. More »
And so here we are in early December, bringing you our annual roundup of the year’s 10 best albums, as chosen by the Idolator crew made up of Robbie Daw, Sam Lansky, Carl Williott, Mike Wass and Bradley Stern. Aside from one iconic dance-pop act, a pair of hip hop luminaries and a sibling indie pop pair who surprised us all with the turn they took with their seventh album, a bulk of our picks are symbolic of the new breed of artists making an impression on the musical landscape. We probably wouldn’t have predicted their inclusion here a year ago — or even known who one or two of them were — but if Baauer taught us anything in 2013 (don’t worry — he’s not on this list), it was to expect the unexpected.
Head below to see the fresh new faces and the seasoned acts who bent our ears in their direction, and gave us our favorite 10 albums of the year. More »
Backed by a live band, a dance troupe and cheerleaders, she shimmied, swayed and dipped through songs off her new album: the appropriate “Like a Champion,” the high-octane “Slow Down” and the seductive lead single “Come and Get It.” During a breakdown she even pulled off a swift wardrobe change, pulling off her fringe skirt to reveal red hot pants. Fire and fireworks shot into the sky.
As in her album, flaunting her singing chops isn’t Selena’s top priority. Instead, the point seemingly was to show her home state how she’s pulled off the versatile but always high-energy choreography that she’s seen from pop stars like Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.

Let’s not forget Rita Ora — another master at Instagram sexiness. She was recently topless as was Popping Up artist Ilia Darlin, who took a stroll in the garden without so much as bra. Oh and Iggy Azalea wore a blindfold to kill time. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez took cute selfies and urged fans to stay positive. But who’s interested in that? More »
