Kathy Griffin Challenges Nicki Minaj To A “Boo-Tay-Off”: Morning Mix

:: Comedian Kathy Griffin has officially nominated Nicki Minaj..not for the Ice Bucket Challenge, but a butt contest — “a boo-tay-off,” rather — after having seen Minaj’s “Anaconda” video. “It’s like the Ice Bucket Challenge, but it doesn’t even have any charity associated with it at all,” Griffin says. :: One of Nicki Minaj‘s back-up dancers was bitten by a six-foot long, non-venomous snake during rehearsals for the MTV VMAs. (Yes, they were performing her Sir Mix-A-Lot-sampling “Anaconda.”) “It is in no way life-threatening, but scary,” a Viacom rep said. [MTV]

:: Speaking of the VMAs: Iggy Azalea fell off stage while performing at a pre-awards show benefit concert. Afterwards, The New Classic star posted a video of the incident herself. “Sorry, but it would be a crime not to share this with you all, I know I laughed,” she said. [Instagram]

:: Wiz Khalifa canceled a concert in Culta Vista, Calif., after finding out that a fan was fatally shot backstage at a show the night before. “This was a senseless tragedy. Violence is never the answer. My prayers go out to the victim’s family,” he said. [Billboard]

The 20 Best Albums, EPs & Singles Of 2014 (So Far): January – June Releases

What's Good?
Let’s face it, pop fanatics — decent albums have been few and far between this year. And now that we’re halfway through 2014, we at Idolator found ourselves hard-pressed to scrounge up 10 LPs released between January and June, as we’ve done in years past, to shine the spotlight on.

So instead we decided to open the field up a bit and include singles and EP releases, as well as albums, and throw them all together in one ranked list of the best of the best in pop from this year, to-date — all compiled by Idolator’s editors and a couple of the site’s contributors.

It’s now a three-day holiday weekend, so head below and take some time to absorb and perhaps discover some of new music. And, who knows — you might even work out a decent playlist to whip together from our picks. More »

Sky Ferreira Defends Terry Richardson, Lady Gaga’s Right To Self-Expression In Facebook Post

Sky Speaks Out
One of the reasons we’re big fans of Sky Ferreira around here is not only because of her very, very good music, but because of her outspokenness — especially in the face of controversy.

As a result of the Internet’s condemnation of Lady Gaga regarding the newly surfaced, controversy-riddled preview of the unreleased video for “Do What U Want” — the one that features two artists embroiled in sexual abuse allegations over the years, R. Kelly and photographer Terry Richardson — Sky’s work was also called into question because of her ongoing working relationship with Richardson, including their many, many photoshoots in the past, as well as Sky’s own video for “Red Lips.” And so, she decided to respond.

“As someone who has worked very closely with Terry Richardson on many many many occasions since I was 17 years old I would like to say… from my OWN personal experience: I have never been forced or manipulated into anything,” she begins in the Facebook note posted yesterday. Pitbull’s Pants Steal The Show At World Cup Opening Ceremony: Morning Mix

Did You Hear?

:: Pitbull stole the spotlight from Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte during the World Cup opening ceremony. It’s not for being an electrifying performer, though – his high-waisted white capris, what one viewer called “diaper pants,” became the talk of social media. [ABC]

:: Beyonce and Jay Z announced the first European dates of their joint On the Run tour. The hip-hop royal couple will perform in Paris on September 12 and 13. Tickets go on sale June 19. [Digital Spy]

:: Skrillex‘s two-hour Superjam set at Bonnaroo was filled with surprises: Janelle Monae covered Michael Jackson (“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”) and James Brown (“I Feel Good”), Mystikal popped up and Lauryn Hill showed up unannounced to close with the Fugees‘ “Ready or Not.” [Billboard]

:: Lana Del Rey first wrote the Lou Reed-referencing “Brooklyn Baby” to feature the rock legend himself. She tried to meet with him, too. “I took the red eye [to New York], touched down at 7 a.m. … and two minutes later, he died,” she says. [The Guardian]

:: Eve married British fashion designer Maxmillion Cooper in Ibiza, Spain, over the weekend. “I’m so happy to make Eve my wife,” Cooper says. “The whole experience has been amazing and we are both so happy to have tied the knot.” [E!]

:: Sky Ferreira recently stopped by a Brazilian TV show, to be asked whether fans like her debut Night Time, My Time for the music, the cover art or “because of the tits, of course.” Her answer was flawless: “I’m pretty sure it’s because of the work, but I guess it helps if you’re a pervert.” [DIY]

PHOTOS: Sky Ferreira Looks Magnifique For ‘Le Monde’ Magazine

Sporting a striking look that seems like a straight-up homage to Jane Fonda‘s character Bree Daniels in 1971 Oscar winner Klute, Sky Ferreira is the very definition of glam in Alasdair McLellan‘s shots for French publication Le Monde. The singer recently wrapped her stint as opener on Miley Cyrusnow-canceled North American Bangerz Tour, and last week she premiered the controversial video for her latest Night Time, My Time single, “I Blame Myself.”

When it comes to her own fashion sense, while not working, Sky pretty much sticks with what she knows. “I still go to all the same stores I went to in high school,” she told Idolator earlier this month. “Sometimes I do like having nice clothes, but most of my clothes are not designer clothes.”

Sky Ferreira Just Destroyed Everyone Who Said Her “I Blame Myself” Video Is Racist

This is why we can’t have nice things. Or, everything is embarrassing, you might say. Sky Ferreira released her thoroughly badass “I Blame Myself” video yesterday, and within about two seconds it was being labeled by some viewers as “racist.” The main issue is that the visual finds the (very) white Ferreira in the role of gang leader/dance commander in Compton, and save for a couple stray characters like a cop, the actors are not white, including her cadre of black backup dancers.

So, like Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen before her, Ferreira was accused of using non-white performers as props (on a related note: she’s the only female in the vid, so does that mean she’s using males as props and thus is SEXIST TOO?). And like those stars before her, Ferreira responded by saying the roles were filled based on who had the most talent, regardless of skin color.

But the critiques didn’t stop, so she didn’t stop with that simple explanation. Sky took to Facebook last night (April 16) to fully defend the video, highlighting her family makeup and upbringing, and absolutely laying into those who cried racism in the process. “Stop trying to search for something that isn’t there… My brother is half black. My cousins are black. My family is Latina & Native American. Some of my family is in the video. I wasn’t raised in a ‘white’ household,” she wrote. “Should I consciously only cast white dancers from now on?… Please do research before you make such shitty accusations about people.”

Sky Ferreira’s “I Blame Myself”: Watch The Stylish Video & A Making-Of Clip

sky ferreira i blame myself video
Blame Game
Sky Ferreira has premiered the stylish video for “I Blame Myself,” with some help from online fashion retailer SSENSE, who styled her for the shoot (and all her getups are available for purchase for any Sky stans and/or budding fashion icons out there). Ferreira owns the camera for this Compton-based video — so many hair flips! Dance breakdowns! — and ends up approaching the same “wimpy pop star coming off as totally badass” vibe that Michael Jackson channeled in “Bad.” Needless to say, it is great.

The visual was shot earlier this month by Grant Singer, who has directed Ferreira’s last six videos. Watch it over at SSENSE, and check out the behind-the-scenes-footage below. More »

Sky Ferreira’s “I Blame Myself” Video: Watch A Preview

sky ferreira I blame myself video teaser clip
You Think You Know Her So Well
The wait is nearly over for Sky Ferreira‘s full visual for her latest Night Time, My Time single “I Blame Myself,” which is now scheduled to premiere this Wednesday, April 16, through a collaborative video series by online retailer SSENSE and the print publication System. The clip was shot entirely in Los Angeles.

During our interview with Ferreira last week, she told us the following about her “I Blame Myself” video: “I can’t really give too many details about it yet, but I shot it in L.A. with Grant Singer, who does all my other videos. And my family’s in it.”

In the above teaser clip, we see Sky wearing shorts while singing in a graffiti-riddled alleyway and sitting in a red car while donning a sheer top. Give it a watch. More »

Sky Ferreira Reflects On Making Her Album, Talks Miley Cyrus, Nirvana & Instagram: Idolator Interview

Sky Ferreira Idolator interview 2014 I Blame Myself Nirvana Kate Bush Night Time My Time
Sky Chats
Last year, we here at Idolator were so blown away by the guitar-pop freshness of Sky Ferreira‘s debut LP Night Time, My Time  — and by the fact that it actually, finally was released — that we dubbed it the best album of 2013. (By the way, you should really enter our contest to win a signed copy of the CD!) So naturally we jumped at the opportunity to sit down with Sky when she breezed through New York earlier this week, after performing as the opener for her pal Miley Cyrus during the Bangerz Tour.

On stage at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center last Saturday, Ferreira, who’s been recovering from a 2013 vocal injury, sang “Sad Dream” and dedicated it to Cyrus following the recent death of the latter’s beloved dog Floyd. It marked the first time Sky had been able to perform the song in seven months.

Over the course of our conversation, she talked about the progress of her voice’s healing, plus she gave a few details on her upcoming video for “I Blame Myself” and discussed what it was like to put together her debut album. (We should mention that she’s also extremely excited about Kate Bush‘s upcoming series of comeback concerts in London.) More »

Stream Sky Ferreira’s BBC Radio Session

Sky Ferreira is all over the place these days, in a very good way — she’s opening for Miley Cyrus across the US, she stopped by our NYC studio to chat and sign a couple copies of Night Time, My Time for fans to win and she recently performed a trio of songs for BBC Radio 1. And now that Maida Vale session is available to stream.

It started off with “I Blame Myself,” and the arrangement had a nice cloud of reverb over it, with Ferreira’s voice sounding far too big for whatever radio soundbooth they were in. Up next she belted out “24 Hours” and “You’re Not The One,” and the crunchy ’80s core of the songs really took hold in the live setting. Stream the BBC session below. More »
