Did you have trouble viewing your “What’s Happening?” Twitter feed on June 25? Chances are, if you were barreled over by the Fail Whale that day, it was because news of Michael Jackson’s death was being typed out by users of the social networking service at lightning speed.
PC World has published Twitter’s Top Trending Topics Of 2009, and—no shock here—MJ wound up being the most talked about person in the past 12 months. Vocal (and sales) powerhouse Susan Boyle comes in just behind Jackson at #2. And Time can feel properly justified in singling out Adam Lambert as one of its 25 People Who Mattered In 2009—the glammed-up American Idol runner-up was the third most discussed person this year on Twitter.
Over on the hashtag round-up, #MusicMonday came in first, while #sxsw (or South By Southwest) landed at #3. So much for #FollowFriday, which didn’t even rank in the Top 10. American Idol and Glee topped the television topics.

If last week’s early album sales projections and Chris Brown’s anti-retail Twitter rant were any indication, it hasn’t been too hard to assess that Brown’s third album Graffiti is set to pretty much stiff on this week’s upcoming Billboard Top 200 Albums chart (officially published Thursday).
Last week Billboard initially reported that Graffiti was on track to sell 95,000 to 110,000 copies. Today Hits Daily Double offered up its tally on the seven-day period’s album sales, and has Chris debuting at #6, with a ho-hum 102,489 copies moved.
Scottish song-vixen Susan Boyle, on the other hand, appears to have easily retained the #1 spot with I Dreamed A Dream for a third week, with another 582,000 in sales. More »
After spending two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with I Dreamed A Dream, Susan Boyle is now being projected by the industry publication to stay perched at the top for a third time.
The Scottish hellcat’s debut has already sold 1.23 million copies in only its first 14 days of release, and Billboard says she could move anywhere from 500,000 to 600,000 more by the time next week’s chart is published. In fact, with four sales weeks left in 2009 for shoppers to snatch up Boyle’s set of standards, she just might overtake Grammy nominee Taylor Swift (at 2.53 million with Fearless) and land the year’s best-selling album overall. Susan Boyle managed to fend off Andrea Bocelli’s My Christmas to retain the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart this week, the trade publication reports. I Dreamed A Dream has now sold a total of 1.23 copies in the U.S. after only two weeks.
Well, Simon Cowell did have Boyle record “Silent Night” for her set of standards, and you can never underestimate the impulse buys of the holiday-shopping public. Does this technically make I Dreamed A Dream a holiday album? Hardly. But when it comes to safe fare for the whole family in December, Susan Boyle more than fits the bill of perfect cookie-baking jams to bring to Grandma’s house. More »
In today’s episode of “Fiddy Checks Google Trends”: protagonist Curtis Jackson hypes his Before I Self Destruct by randomly name-checking someone with a track record of recent and bona fide commercial success in music—Susan Boyle. (This approach is also known as The Bieber Method.) While he’s at it, he’s also trashing Jay-Z, which is odd given that perhaps the one thing 50 needs to figure out more than anything else is how to age gracefully. Is he just bored not having a nemesis now that Kanye’s taking a break? More »
Seems like yesterday that the Jonas Brothers were burnin’ up the hearts of White House pop fans. But even Disney’s tween dreamboats may have to yield to the shock and awe of Susan Boyle’s global assault. As if notching biggest sales week for any album this year wasn’t enough to command respect, ever-reliable UK news outlet The Daily Express reports that Susan Boyle has been asked to drop by 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for a “small, intimate gathering” during the First Lady’s 46th birthday party in January.
