This was one of those two-day stretches where pop leak blogs were in overdrive, thanks to the songs leaking from every crevice in the music industry’s crumbling firmament (including its artists’ own blogs). Who wins? Well, the ad sales team at RapidShare, for sure. As far as listeners’ fates, the results are decidedly more mixed, as you’ll see from the brief reviews of new songs by Kanye West and T-Pain, Green Day, Dr. Dre and T.I., the Black Eyed Peas, Depeche Mode, Jennifer Lopez, and Ciara located after the jump.

I’ve used my bully pulpit on this site to complain about the endlessly delayed release of Charlie Wilson’s Uncle Charlie, so it only seems fair to mention that Jive finally put the album out, eight months after the commercial release of the spectacular T-Pain-assisted single “Supa Sexxy.” (It’s also been a year since that song leaked.) Amazingly, an album with a bankable urban star and a deluge of guest appearances actually seems to be selling; trade rag HITS is projecting that the former Gap Band singer’s solo effort will make next week’s top five, moving around 50,000 copies. If you’re looking for something grown and sexy, the disc has its moments, including “Let It Out” with Snoop Dogg and a track featuring Lil Wayne. Fan-made videos for “Let It Out” and the still quite enjoyable “Supa Sexxy” are below the cut.
Death Cab For Cutie have taken a political stand against AutoTune, the devil scourge that puts the moral turpitude of our nation’s teenagers at risk, exposing them to savage robot noises, leaving them confused and helpless. All that bleeping and blooping and buying of dranks! Thank god there’s Ben Gibbard—savior of the flaccid—to speak out about this national dilemma! Death Cab wore suits and blue ribbons (pictured above) to the Grammy Awards to raise awareness of the fact that T-Pain would benefit from the fun, flat sound of a Chris Walla production.
As a devoted fan of Hot Rod, it would seem like… More »
What were the 80 most important musical recordings, artists, trends, events, and performances of 2008? What were the eight things this year that broke our hearts—or, at least, our ears? We’re happy to announce 80 ’08 (and Heartbreak), Idolator’s year-end overview. The list is below the jump.
Suppose, if you were of radio-listening age in 1963, you disliked the productions of Phil Spector. Say you believed him to make all the singers on his records sound the same, and that in any case Dean Martin or Bukka White represented real music. With hindsight, would you not say that you were on the wrong side of history?
Earlier this year, I posted the video for “Supa Sexxy”, former Gap Band singer Charlie Wilson’s collaboration with T-Pain. At the time, I wonderd why the track wasn’t more popular. Now, it’s eight months later and the album of the same title seems to be lost forever. But why?
