2014 Oscar Nominations: Pharrell, U2 Up For Best Original Song, Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey Snubbed

Welp, the Oscars don’t even love her while she’s young and beautiful. Lana Del Rey‘s seriously great Great Gatsby track failed to secure an Academy Award nomination for Original Song, despite making the long list of contenders last month. (Maybe that smear campaign succeeded after all.) Taylor Swift‘s “Sweeter Than Fiction” from One Chance and Coldplay‘s “Atlas” from Catching Fire were also snubbed.

So which songs did make the cut? Pharrell‘s “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 and U2‘s “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom are the frontrunners of the five nominated tracks. Rounding out the field are Karen O‘s Her track “The Moon Song,” Idina Menzel‘s “Let It Go” from Frozen‘s smash soundtrack and the Alone Yet Not Alone title track, whatever that is. See the full list of Oscar nominees here. More »

Anyway, Justin Timberlake was pop music’s big winner, with three awards comprising Favorite Album (The 20/20 Experience), Favorite Male Artist and Favorite R&B Artist. Even better, though, is how he celebrated the big night: with some Taco Bell. No, really.

We already know Britney Spears stole the show, but she also managed to win Favorite Pop Artist. 2013 In Review: The 10 Best Music Beefs Of The Year

When historians discuss 2013 fifty years from now the major talking points will no doubt be Beyonce‘s stealth album, Miley Cyrus 2.0 and the proliferation of public (and very messy) beefs. Instead of picking up the phone or — holding their tongue — our favorite pop stars used social media to air their dirty laundry.

While shade throwing and open letters (hello Sinead O’Connor!) can be hugely entertaining, most of these encounters have ended badly. Just look at Azealia Banks, who could well be the first person to commit career suicide by Twitter. See the year’s 10 most memorable beefs after the jump. More »
