Taylor Swift Breaks More Records With “Shake It Off,” Highest Billboard Top 40 Debut Since Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover”

Tay's Shaking Up The Charts
Another week, another round of chart and radio records being shattered by Taylor Swift‘s unstoppably catchy new 1989 ditty (and current #1 single in the country), “Shake It Off.”

According to a new press release from Swift’s label, “not only did “Shake It Off” make the highest Billboard Top 40 debut since Mariah Carey‘s 1993 single “Dreamlover,” but the song breaks the record for Most Adds to Top 40 and Hot AC Stations in its first week, being added to over 277 radio stations across the country.

And, in nerdier chart news, “Shake It Off” also now notches the highest debut in Mediabase Hot AC history (#10), and the largest one week spin gain on both the Mediabase Top 40 and Hot AC charts. Damn, Tay! Haters gonna hate, but Swift just keeps on shake, shake, shaking up the charts. More »

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” Debuts At Number One On The Billboard Hot 100

Shake It To The Top!
Evidently she doesn’t have to worry about those pesky haters too much: Taylor Swift just shook and shimmied her way to a #1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

The 1989 pop titan, who is no stranger to insanely high chart sales, just notched another major victory with the lead single from her forthcoming pop record, which she just performed at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. Naturally, she’s gone and broke a bunch of records while doing so: “‘Shake’ arrives with 544,000 first-week downloads sold in the week ending Aug. 24, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The sum marks the greatest weekly total this year and the fourth-best bow all-time,” reports Billboard. She also broke a radio record, debuting at #9 on Adult Pop Songs and #12 on Pop Songs. Quite simply, Swift just demolished the charts once again.

Kathy Griffin Challenges Nicki Minaj To A “Boo-Tay-Off”: Morning Mix

:: Comedian Kathy Griffin has officially nominated Nicki Minaj..not for the Ice Bucket Challenge, but a butt contest — “a boo-tay-off,” rather — after having seen Minaj’s “Anaconda” video. “It’s like the Ice Bucket Challenge, but it doesn’t even have any charity associated with it at all,” Griffin says. [AP]

:: One of Nicki Minaj‘s back-up dancers was bitten by a six-foot long, non-venomous snake during rehearsals for the MTV VMAs. (Yes, they were performing her Sir Mix-A-Lot-sampling “Anaconda.”) “It is in no way life-threatening, but scary,” a Viacom rep said. [MTV]

:: Speaking of the VMAs: Iggy Azalea fell off stage while performing at a pre-awards show benefit concert. Afterwards, The New Classic star posted a video of the incident herself. “Sorry, but it would be a crime not to share this with you all, I know I laughed,” she said. [Instagram]

:: Cat Power invited Sky Ferreira to perform at a concert benefiting Ferguson protesters. Ferreira says that while she’s scheduled to perform elsewhere, all proceeds from her own show will also go toward the same cause. [Rolling Stone]

:: Wiz Khalifa canceled a concert in Culta Vista, Calif., after finding out that a fan was fatally shot backstage at a show the night before. “This was a senseless tragedy. Violence is never the answer. My prayers go out to the victim’s family,” he said. [Billboard]

MTV VMAs 2014: Taylor Swift Looks Like A Praying Mantis

Taylor Swift is really embracing her switch to pop music. “Shake It Off” is an upbeat toe-tapper, she (controversially) put her own spin on twerking in the dorky video and today (August 24) walked the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in a tiny one-piece leotard (?) that revealed more than many of us wanted to see. Take that, Miley Cyrus!

This look raises so many questions. The first of which is obviously — what was she thinking? Taylor’s slim frame makes her the perfect clothes horse for elegant gowns but she resembles a baby blue bean pole in this outfit. The 24-year-old also looks uncomfortable and a little embarrassed. On the other hand, at least she’s having fun and trying to mix it up instead of dressing like a 47-year-old socialite. So yay? More »

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” Sparks Flash Mob: Watch

With “Shake It Off,” Taylor Swift has essentially re-written a beloved cheerleader’s anthem to give everyone a reason to let loose: Ballerinas? Yes. Break dancers? Sure. That girl on the bleachers? Of course. So, even though the Mark Romanek-directed video has sparked a healthy debate over how inclusive the video may be – its YouTube still is of Swift, gawking at the sight of twerkers after she crawled beneath their legs – the lead 1989 single was bound to catch on.

Just a few days after its premiere, a dance company has already paid tribute to “Shake It Off.” At a Raising Cane’s restaurant in Lewisville, Texas, dozens of members from Dimensions Dance Company broke out into a flash mob. Four of them posed as ballet dancers. One did a backflip in the middle of the floor. Meanwhile, a young blond woman alternated between dancing flawlessly and appearing overwhelmed, just as Swift did in her own video. At the song’s end, she even did the awkward curtsy.

Swift could not have been more pleased by the end result. “So @markromanek just sent me this and I’m hyperventilating with joy over it,” she said on Twitter. See the “Shake If Off” flash mob below. More »

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” Director Responds To Earl Sweatshirt’s “Uninformed” Criticism

Taylor Swift‘s “Shake It Off” video was supposed to be a feel-good romp that inspired viewers to let go and have a little fun but many commentators felt the urban dance scene appropriated black culture and perpetuated stereotypes. One of the most vocal critics was Earl Sweatshirt, who called the Mark Romanek-directed visual “inherently offensive and ultimately harmful”.

Romanek responded to the Odd Future rapper’s accusations today (August 21) and vigorously defended his work. “[Earl Sweatshirt] stated clearly that he hadn’t seen the video and didn’t even intend to watch it,” the filmmaker told Vulture. “So, respectfully, that sort of invalidates his observations from the get-go. And it’s this one uninformed tweet that got reported on and rehashed.”

“We simply choose styles of dance that we thought would be popular and amusing and cast the best dancers that were presented to us without much regard to race or ethnicity,” he continued. “If you look at it carefully, it’s a massively inclusive piece. It’s very, very innocently and positively intentioned.” More »

Earl Sweatshirt Is Not Impressed By Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” Video: See His Tweets

Taylor Swift is the latest pop star to incur the wrath of Black Twitter for perpetuating stereotypes in her “Shake It Off” video. (The former country queen can call Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen for advice). She literally dances like no one is watching in the intentionally corny visual but the scene where she twerks has been labelled offensive by some commentators.

“Haven’t watched the taylor swift video and I don’t need to watch it to tell you that it’s inherently offensive and ultimately harmful,” tweeted Earl Sweatshirt last night (August 18). “Perpetuating black stereotypes to the same demographic of white girls who hide their prejudice by proclaiming their love of the culture.” See the Odd Future rapper’s full commentary after the jump.
