If you have not yet watched Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, then you're missing out on a once-a-week opportunity to go absolutely, emphatically, screaming-at-the-cat coconuts. Despite being billed as a grounded-in-reality look at the entertainment world, it's actually an Ivy-league pipe-dream in which all good comedy begins and ends with A&E's Night At The Improv, and everyone talks like an eager-to-impress magazine intern. It's the reason why caps-lock keys were invented.
Last night's episode, however, was the most loonily far-fetched yet: In order to demonstrate just how edgy and dangerous the fake-SNL show-within-a-show can get, producer Aaron Sorkin actually booked Sting as a music guest. Not just any Sting, mind you, but the Sting who makes the ladies swoon by playing "Fields Of Gold" on a lute. It's a painful clip, not only because Sorkin's cool-hunting radar is still stuck in the mid-'90s, but also because Sting's accompanist looks as though he's going to make sweet sweetness to a 7th-century stringed instrument.

sting's voice sounds like a paraody of sting. better yet, jimmy stewart's very best impression of sting's impression of sting.

this show, i want to like it, but it makes it so hard. it's like it's daring me to like it.
i totally agree with mr. bananas. every monday at 11:01 p.m., I promise myself I will never watch it again, but for some reason I am right there watching the next week.
the show is infuriatingly mediocre.
sorkin's still a great writer, but his shows have always consistently featured dry-heave-worthy soundtracks and musical selections.
and yeah, the show's still entertaining to watch but it's trying way too hard.

Love the post. The title itself is wondeful, the best blog post title I've seen in awhile. Anything that's good enough to make St. Paul's bones clack-a-lack in San Paolo fuori le mura meets with my approval.

I happened to like that episode. And, like Sting, I thought the rendition of his tunes worth playing. It's hard for a 60 minute show to aim at conveying something worthwhile while at the same time satisfying varying degrees of realism requirements that its audience obviosuly has. Do we watch an action flick and blink an eye at the typical dialogue and unlikely chain of events? Like a short story must distill everything within a limited number of words, this show relies on certain techniques to advance the plot, the ideas, and the character development. I think that, while not perfect, it certainly comes close enough. And I think we ought to laud Sting's efforts at exploring new musical horizons -- I thought the music was captivating. But to each his own, I guess.
