Britain's the Only Ones are best known stateside for "Another Girl, Another Planet," the late-'70s love-is-a-drug power-pop lament that's been covered by numerous hard-living bar-bands, including the Replacements. And while they've never had more than a cult following here, the band has experienced a bit of a revival in the U.K., thanks in part to Pete Doherty's oft-repeated admiration for troubled Only Ones frontman Peter Perret. Somewhere out there is a 7" by a band called American Ruse with an amazing cover of "Another Girl..." on it. Perhaps a reader out there has it. I haven't heard it in eons, but it rocks.
The Feb. issue of Uncut has a brief feature on The Only Ones. Apparently, Peter Perrett is very sick, which means I can add them to my ever-growing list of great bands I'll never see live.
