Maybe the highest bidder was a stooge, so as he pulls out, the VU record's owner can sell to the next (real) high bidder outwith ebay, thus avoiding ebay's cut of the profits.

Is there a reason Hill couldn't have dealt with this at a real auction house instead?

Would the cost of doing that be more or less than doing it through eBay?

And at least with the former option, you wouldn't have so much publicity such that joke bids and sabotage would be the only result. Sure, people would have to fly over to the auction, but this thing would have fetched five digits easily anyway. Those who could afford to entertain the idea of the acetate could probably afford the airfare easily.

Doesn't anyone else feel like something as significant as this VU acetate should be handled by a more professional auctioneer ie. Sotheby's? Leave eBay to NES games and concert tickets...
