“Rolling Stone” Prepares To Get Lost In Translation
Today’s Wall Street Journal features a write-up on the Japanese edition of Rolling Stone, which is launching this month. It’s a registration-required article, so here are the highlights:
· After the magazine launched in China last year, it was almost shut down when it “failed to print the Chinese rendering of the magazine’s title in sufficiently large type.” Also problematic: The slew of misleading “Jann Can Cook” headlines. · A Japanese version of Rolling Stone was actually initiated in the mid-’70s, but bottomed out due to of “financial reasons”–though a February 1974 issue did manage to play four sell-out shows at Budokan. · The editorial mix will feature “a mix of local stories and translated articles from the U.S.,” including such RS mainstays as, “Kurt Cobain: Dead” and “Kurt Cobain: Remember When He Was Alive?” · They’re not sending the Rolingstone.com bloggers. Alas.
