Last night, anyone who’s ever purchased something from Tower.com, the Caiman-owned online unit of Tower Records, received an e-mail from the CEO that read in part:

We are very pleased to report to you that the legacy of Tower Records will live on through Tower.com. We are currently in the final stages of the sale of Tower.com to Tower.com Inc., which is committed to upholding and maintaining the integrity of Tower Records, and positioning Tower.com as your preferred online shopping experience.

Could it be? The revival of Tower, and even some brick-and-mortar stores to boot?

Well, not so fast: As Coolfer points out, things aren’t looking good for the relaunch: Two of the three former Tower employees who were brought on by the new management to smooth the transition have left the company, citing conflicts with the new ownership–and the new Tower.com may also leave the Sacramento area. Perhaps the “legacy” being referred to in the letter is actually the one borne by the record chain’s final, tumultuous year?
