ARTIST: The Spice Girls SONG: “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” WEB DEBUT: Oct. 23, 2007

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: A picked-guitar ballad that will probably have a lot of old-school Spice fans scrambling for their “Viva Forever” MP3s, “Headlines” is a curious choice for a comeback single–it’s frankly kind of bland, and it’s not hard to think that it would have maybe warranted being the sixth single from Spice or Spiceworld. Then again, it has been 10 years since the girls first burst on the scene, and the laid-back pace of “Headlines” surely reflects that. One highlight: Mel C’s verses–her brassy voice is brimming with confidence, and it’s pretty obvious why, out of the five Spices, she had the most successful solo career. (Glad to see she’s recovered from that “I Want Candy” debacle.) WHERE TO FIND IT: The always-reliable Kevipod Music has an MP3–for now–but if those links have been yanked, it’s streaming on YouTube.
