Mercury Rev Never Washed Their Hair
I was on the Mercury Rev train up to and including Deserter’s Songs, but even then I suspected the Dave Friedman/Jonathan Donahue tag team turning the amps down and preciousness way up boded quite ill for the too-cute adult-alternative that followed. This, however, is classic MR, from the mumblemouth era, when the Buffalo psych-rockers were mostly intent on making their guitars out whammy each other. I spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out what was going in the video for “Car Wash Hair” until I realized that trying to suss the intentions of people who were likely baked at the time is pretty futile. So instead: Look! Llamas!
