New York City has blocked the sale of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the storied South Bronx address known as the birthplace of hip-hop, which was declared a historical landmark by the state last year. The city’s decision, however, has been attributed to financial reasons, rather than out of deference to the legacy of the parties held there by DJ Kool Herc in 1973. “It’s not just about 1520, it’s about all affordable housing,” says Kool Herc, who is still not suing Jay-Z.
