Even with the promise of a chick singing while only wearing a bikini and a way overinflated ego, ratings for last night’s American Idol premiere were down 10% from last year’s opener, with an estimated 30.1 million total viewers tuning in. (Last year’s premiere raked in 33.4 million people.) A statistic that could maybe be compared to that number: In the Soundscan week ending Sunday, 6.3 million “album units” were sold.
