Nicole Scherzinger’s Solo Career Will Happen By Hook Or By Crook

The Pussycat Dolls’ new single is the throwbacky, “I Will Survive”-biting track “Hush Hush,” and one thing sort of flies out at you from the single’s cover: The “featuring Nicole Scherzinger” that denotes that only one of the Dolls is providing the lead vocals on the track. Which isn’t much of a secret; indeed, commenters here have noted that the Dolls’ debut album PCD had some fine print pointing out that La Scherz provided “all lead and backing vocals,” and the tales of her solo debut’s woes were this site’s bread and butter for quite a while. But one of the other Dolls has had more than enough of playing second fiddle in a group that she’s allegedly a member of!

So the other night during the Dolls’ stint opening for Britney Spears in Phoenix, perpetual second banana Melody Thornton took some time out during her intro to thank fans for supporting her “even though I’m not featured.” The outburst by Thornton–a Phoenix native who according to scuttlebutt is probably first in line to get Scherzinger’s lead-vocalist job should people actually start to care about her outside the context of the Dolls–is probably not all that surprising in context, what with Scherzinger, despite having a not-very-good voice, being basically the only Doll who’s even allowed to be identified by name in the press clippings. Given that Doll Domination has been kind of a flop–even with its “2.0” reissue, it’s only sold 326,000 copies through last week, and even my favorite crazy leakblogger is proclaiming that “Pussycat Dolls is almost OFFICIALLY over just like Danity Kane is”–one wonders when we’re going to have to deal with “Her Name Is Nicole 2.0” being threatened once again.
