Everybody Calm Down: Girls Aloud Promise That They Are Not Splitting Up

TV-borne British girl group Girls Aloud has been the source of split rumors by the overheated press in their homeland this week, thanks to one member arriving in the States to work on a solo album with will.i.am and another telling a UK magazine that she now considered herself “an actress with a girlband on the side.” What could all this outside activity mean? Well, according to a post that the Girls made on their Web site yesterday, it doesn’t mean that they’re breaking up—in fact, it just means that they’re recharging their batteries. (Whew!)

“We’ve decided to write this note together, because we want to set the record straight about what is happening in our world. Over the next 12 months we are going to be involved in a lot of different things—music, TV, fashion and more. Sometimes it may be a solo project—sometimes just a couple of us and sometimes all five of us together. We are definitely NOT splitting up. In fact we have all signed a new contract with Fascination/Polydor Records guaranteeing that we will release at least three Girls Aloud albums – minimum. We will definitely all be going into the studio next year to record—and there will definitely be a new GA album in 2010.”

The Popstars The Rivals-spawned group put out their most recent album Out Of Control late last year. Their Pet Shop Boys collaboration “The Loving Kind” is absolutely smashing (I actually heard it on the in-store Muzak at a chain clothing store over the weekend, and mourned the Girls’ lack of ability to crack American radio while looking for a shirtdress), while the lead single from that album “The Promise” could, in retrospect, be my favorite single of last year. (I know, I know, revisionist history—but it came out in October, and its charms take a while to creep up.)
