“New Perspective,” the first track from Panic! At The Disco to be released since
the band split in two a few weeks ago, and it’s a pretty fun little rock song, one that Diablo Cody will no doubt use to soundtrack an annoying-witticism-filled party scene during Jennifer’s Body. (“New Perspective” appears on that forthcoming vampire flick’s soundtrack.) Perhaps the most encouraging sign about the band’s post-split direction: There’s a nod to the theatricality that the band was beloved-by-me for at the 2:50 mark, when the the proceedings open up into this Queen-like choir that crests, then falls into a bit of piano-led melancholia before kicking right back into the song’s main theme. It’s a musical trope that I’m a sucker for every time, and they pull it off in a way that makes me kind of excited to hear what Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith have up their sleeves next. Panic!
