Live Blog: The 2010 Grammy Awards

It’s Grammy night, and we’re live blogging the awards’ 52nd ceremony below the jump! If you need a refresh on the nominees, we’ve got them right here.  Getting up to speed, Beyonce snagged four awards during the pre-show telecast (Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song), The Black Eyed Peas won three, and Maxwell, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift grabbed two golden phonographs each.

7:47 p.m. Congrats to David Guetta, who won Best Remixed Recording for “When Love Takes Over.” If you haven’t already read it, check out our interview with Guetta from earlier from earlier this week.

8:00 p.m. Anyone following Imogen Heap’s Grammy dress on Twitter? It’s got its own account.

8:01 p.m. Lady Gaga looks like a praying mantis! Why does she always tease with that slow version of “Poker Face” live?

8:03 p.m. It’s like Gaga: The Musical on the stage. Great set. Well, tick off the Elton John/Gaga duet rumor as true. Captain Fantastic is banging out a “Speechless/Your Song” mashup with her.

8:07 p.m. Elton looks like he swallowed a glitter canon for lunch.

8:09 p.m. Stephen Colbert on Lady Gaga and Elton: “I didn’t even know they were dating.”

8:10 p.m. Colbert on Susan Boyle: “Sure, Justin Timberlake may have brought the sexy back, but Susan Boyle sent it away again.”

8:13 p.m. Sasha fierceness! Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” = Song Of The Year. Bey’s not there to accept the award though.

8:18 p.m. All props to Green Day, but this “21 Guns” gig might have been better if it was just the American Idiot cast? Maybe that’s just our inner Gleek talking, though.

8:26 p.m. Yeeeeeee-Haw. Best Country Album = Taylor Swift. See, we told you the Fearless steamroller would keep on rolling! Album Of The Year is within her grasp now.

8:32 p.m. Woah! Beyonce just launched from “If I Were A Boy” into a cover of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.” If she does “My Humps” next, our heads might explode.

8:39 p.m. Good to see Seal presenting Pink. Dude should get more respect. (Meaning Seal, not Pink).

8:43 p.m. Pink just totally stripped off, save for a few pieces of dental floss stretched over her lady bits. Sorry, monsters, but Pink’s acrobatic routine trumps the Gaga opener.

8:45 p.m. Pink deserved that standing O.

8:48 p.m. Best New Artist = Zac Brown Band. Nice that they were allowed a whole 15 seconds to give their acceptance speech.

8:51 p.m. Getting back to Pink’s performance—too early to call as the best of the night? Of course, there’s still Bon Jovi to come. Let’s see how many clothes they whip off on stage.

8:56 p.m. Uh-oh. Scotch that Pink/best performance comment. The Black Eyed Peas are tearing it up with “Imma Be/I Gotta Feeling.” Rad set, awesome costumes and great teaser for their upcoming world tour.

9:06 p.m. What’s up with Joe Jonas’ lovespawn-of-Clark-Kent-and-Snooki look?

9:08 p.m. Lady Antebellum got the thankless job of following Pink and Black Eyed Peas’ OTT live performances. Nice song, though.

9:11 p.m. Best Comedy Album = Stephen Colbert, A Colbert Christmas. Kathy Griffin (also nominated) looked pissed. Don’t they usually hand this award this before the live show?

9:17 p.m. Dust is settling. Still think Pink rocked the live performances best of all so far.

9:20 p.m. Record Of The Year = a slightly drunk Kings Of Leon, “Use Somebody.” We actually called that one earlier this week.

9:22 p.m. Love how they zoom in on Jay-Z, who won earlier for “D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune),” as Jamie Foxx is Auto-Tuning his heart out “live” with “Blame It.”

9:25 p.m. Justin Bieber is such cougar hunter. Wonder if he pinched Ke$ha’s butt backstage before they presented together?

9:28 p.m. P.S., thanks, Grammy, for following our suggestion to pair Bieber and Ke$ha up together. Hopefully there was a love match tonight.

9:32 p.m. Katy Perry and Alice Cooper presenting Best Rock Album. Why isn’t she boinking him instead?

9:34 p.m. Best Rock Album = Green Day, 21st Century Breakdown. Billie Joe Armstrong: “Now I’m gonna go have shots with Kings Of Leon.”

9:37 p.m. Best comment from Twitter about the legendary Leon Russell, who performed with Best New Artist winners Zac Brown Band: “It’s Santa! Merry Xmas, everyone!!!”

9:49 p.m. Relegating Stevie Nicks to backing vocalist for Taylor Swift is a little cruel. Stevie needs a wind machine and a treadmill up there to show Taylor how it’s done.

9:55 p.m. Lionel Richie plugging the DVD release of This Is It is kinda tacky.

9:58 p.m. Can Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Smoky Robinson and Usher please all go on tour together? Nice to see “Earth Song” getting some recognition. It was a chart-topper across Europe back in ’95, but didn’t do much here.

10:02 p.m. No way—3T on stage (with Prince and Paris Jackson)! Prince Jackson really sounds like his father. Funny, he doesn’t look like him, though.

10:12 p.m. Thankfully Jennifer Nettles and her leather pants are here to liven up this Bon Jovi performance.

10:14 p.m. The tune picked by online voters for Bon Jovi to perform = “Living On A Prayer.” Who knew ’80s mall hair had such a long shelf life?

10:19 p.m. Best Rap/Sung Collaboration = “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West. Massively bummed that “I’m On A Boat” didn’t get it.

10:29 p.m. The Andrea Bocelli/Mary J. Blige duet on “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (with David Foster on piano) was pretty amazing, even though we’ve heard that song more than a few times in the past two weeks.

10:37 p.m. Neil Young was the MusiCares person of the year. Can’t believe he never won a Grammy before. Dozing off with all this other talky bit, though. Maybe Pink will finally drop down from the ceiling?

10:41 p.m. Adam Sandler presenting Album Of The Year nominees Dave Matthews Band. Lookin’ classy in jeans and a t-shirt, Opera Man.

10:46 p.m. Ricky Martin and Glee‘s Lea Michele on stage together. Who’s prettier?

10:48 p.m. Best Female Pop Vocal Performance = Beyonce, “Halo.” Check out our interview with “Halo” songwriter Ryan Tedder.

10:56 p.m. God made suits so Maxwell could show us all how to look f-i-n-e in them. And made Maxwell so he could perform on stage with Roberta Flack!

11:04 p.m. Jeff Beck is rockin’ out in a Les Paul tribute. Too bad Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page didn’t drop by, too.

11:13 p.m. Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem and Travis Barker are doing “Drop The World.” Make it count, Weezy—this is one of your last performances as a free man!

11:22 p.m. Alright, Album Of The Year up next. We predicted Friday it would go to Taylor, but should go to Lady Gaga. Biting our nails (and downing a third glass of wine) in anticipation.

11:27 p.m. Yep, Album Of The Year = Taylor Swift, Fearless. Happy for her, but way too predictable.

11:30 p.m. Ah, well. All in all, we got some amazing acrobatics from Pink, a few crazy new outfits from Lady Gaga, a touching performance from Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli and—perhaps most surprising—Beyonce covering Alanis Morisette.
