Why, Oh, Why Didn’t Rihanna Spice Up ‘Rated R’ With “Sexuality”?

Not sure who was ultimately in charge of the final tracklist for Rihanna’s Rated R, but they must’ve had a momentary lapse of reason when deciding to leave off “Sexuality,” an upbeat dance track that borrows heavily from Prince’s 1981 funk classic “Controversy.”

And maybe it’s only that Prince element that has us hitting repeat over and over on the Ri Ri tune. Either way, Miss Fenty could have definitely livened up her LP by slipping this one in amongst all the other dark jams.

Man, this runs rings around “Russian Roulette.” And “Hard.” And “Rude Boy.” (Though the video for that one is at least a colorful affair.) Who knows—maybe after Ke$ha broke into Prince’s house, he had his fill of helping out young pop tarts.

Hey, look—we’re not saying Rated R was a completely depressing set of songs that made us want to curl up on the bathroom floor and cry for 17 hours straight. But if Prince did grant permission to have “Controversy” interpolated in Rihanna’s “Sexuality,” might we suggest including it on the inevitable Rated R re-release?
