The Morning Mix: Rihanna’s Big B-Day Bash

Rihanna celebrated her 22nd birthday this weekend with 40 of her closest friends and family members at a party organized by new beau Matt Kemp. We hoped the jungle animals from RiRi’s “Rude Boy” video would be made available for guests to ride throughout the shindig, since it’s not a party til you’re shouting “yee-haw!” on top of a stuffed zebra. But we guess a pint-sized dominatrix is adequate enough entertainment.

Did You Hear?

:: Andy Samberg and T-Pain’s Grammy-nominated “I’m On A Boat” gets a death-metal makeover. Extra points to the gentleman who re-enacted the opening skit while wearing corpse-paint.  [Vulture]

:: Lil Wayne had eight root canals in one day. Prison doesn’t sound so bad in comparison. [Pitchfork]

:: Jennifer Lopez’s dangerous addiction to catsuits continues to tear families apart. This time she’s in leather. [Huffington Post]

:: Alicia Keys looks lovely but a little demure in the artwork for her new single “Put It In A Love Song”, which features Beyonce. Somehow she must’ve thought the Samba costume would be too much. [Just Jared]

:: Drake calls Kanye West’s upcoming album Good Ass Job (yes, that is the title) as “one of the best hip-hop albums in the last ten years.” [Rap-Up]

After the jump: Rihanna wasn’t the only musician celebrating a birthday this weekend — we pay respect to a late great icon with our Video Rewind of the Day.

VIDEO REWIND OF THE DAY: Last Saturday would have been Kurt Cobain’s 43rd birthday, and although the Nirvana frontman died in 1994, he’s as popular as ever: there’s a biopic of his life in the works (and if we’re lucky, Meryl Streep will play Courtney Love) and his likeness has been used (and, according to his former bandmates, abused) in one of the world’s most popular video games.

Last November, Nirvana fans flocked to buy the band’s previously unreleased Live At Reading CD/DVD, which showcased the band’s memorable 1992 concert in Reading, U.K. The show is widely considered to be “the most celebrated set in the spectacular band’s brief history,” and here’s one of our favorite clips from their set: Nirvana performs “Lithium” to thousands of screaming fans, and to one dude in particular named Tony Hodgkinson, a friend of the band. Tony flails his arms and moshes with himself on stage while Kurt & Co. rocks on (and his dancing is so distinctive that he merited his own mention on Wikipedia). It looks a little silly, but hey, we would’ve done the same thing had we been in his shoes. R.I.P. Kurt.

Have a great day!
