After the untimely prime time demise of Lilly Scott, perhaps the second biggest shocker on last week’s American Idol results show was the axing of Alex Lambert, who, despite a rocky beginning, managed to improve week after week. The mullet-haired castoff appeared on a St. Patty’s Day-themed The Ellen DeGeneres Show today, and talked about what led him to audition for Idol in the first place.

As it turns out, Lambert’s mom is the one who pushed him to stand before the AI judges. “She’s been trying to make me audition since I was, like, 16,” the now-19-year-old singer told Ellen. “She told me if I didn’t go on the show—or didn’t go audition—she was going to take away my phone.”

After their chat, the “mushy banana” did an acoustic cover of Mario’s hit “Let Me Love You.”

Good for Alex. He actually looks more comfortable while performing now than he did when he was on Idol.
