Neil Patrick Harris Was A Dream On Last Night’s ‘Glee’

On last night’s “Dream On” episode of Glee, we got the non-surprise of Idina Menzel’s Shelby turning out to be Rachel’s mom, Neil Patrick Harris doing magic and some insane vocal acrobatics, and Kevin McHale finally getting to be the star of his own dance (and have two solos featured in one show!). Our favorite clips after the jump.

This is already a given, but Neil Patrick Harris (who played Will Schuester’s high school rival) should be on every single TV show and host every single awards show from now until the end of time. He’s likable, he’s talented, he’s adorable. And here he is sharing a rock duet with Matthew Morrison on Aerosmith’s “Dream On” during an audition for local community theater production of Les Miserables.

My god, NPH killed that high-pitched scream at the end. Please, please, please have him back on as a recurring character. (Sidenote: we don’t recall ever having lighting design synced up with any audition we ever had back in the day, but maybe that’s what all the cool show choir kids are doing nowadays?)

The second most thrilling number of the night was wheelchair-bound Artie’s dream sequence of not only walking, but dancing. It’s fitting that his “Safety Dance” dream was a full-blown flash mob scene, since Glee‘s songs have been featured in real life flash mobs.

The choreography was fresh, young and inventive, and it actually had something to do with the plotline! Phenomenal! It’s unfortunate that Kevin McHale is confined to a wheelchair on the show, since he’s actually a fantastic dancer. (It’s no surprise he used to be in a boy band.) But we really enjoyed Artie’s story in this episode—it was emotional, and it was real, since it didn’t end with Neil Patrick Harris waving his hand over Artie’s legs and giving him the power to walk again. Not everything in real life is tied up with a pretty bow and a crowdpleasing, happy-go-lucky song and dance, and it’s good to see the kids having to deal with problems that can’t be solved.

What did you guys think of last night’s Glee? Was it a dream, or a nightmare?
