Christina Aguilera Knows How To Rock A “Monday Morning”

A Bionic bonus track, “Monday Morning,” surfaced today, and the 70s-inspired funk jam sounds like something that might be on a Scissor Sisters album. It’s so good, we’re wondering why Christina Aguilera picked generic pop dreck like “Not Myself Tonight” to be on the regular version of her album instead of this fun disco dance tune. Listen to it below.

The lyrics (which include lines like “I threw a party, it went all night, told everyone to stay / Neighbors called in to complain and rain on our parade / They told me to use my head and keep my focus straight / Shame on so all of you for being so stiff and straight-laced”) do a good job of presenting Xtina like a party girl, but don’t resort to cursing, thinly veiled euphemisms for dirty sex, or straight-up references to sex like many of the other Bionic tracks.

The tune was produced by John Hill and Switch (Santigold) who also produced the inspired title track, as well as our favorite song on the album, “Elastic Love,” and it definitely helps water down the overabundance of crude sex-minded tracks on the album. As far as we’re concerned, all of Christina’s collaborations with Sia, M.I.A. and Santigold have hit the mark, resulting in fun, heartfelt and/or unique songs that have helped push Aguilera in a more ambitious musical direction.

It’s the tracks co-written or produced by Tricky Stewart, Claude Kelly and Polow Da Don that have disappointed us the most. Those three hitmakers have churned out incredible pop tunes over the years (Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, Miley’s “Party in the U.S.A.”, and Chris Brown’s “Forever” are just a few examples of what they’re capable of), but for some reason, none of their work on Bionic has been all that impressive—”Not Myself Tonight”, “Desnudate”, “Glam”, “Prima Donna” and the atrocious, overdramatic ode to self-love “Vanity,” are the most forced tracks on the album. We would have much prefered if Christina made those five songs the bonus tracks on her deluxe edition so they wouldn’t sully the rest of the elegant and experimental collection of tunes she recorded.

Are you enjoying this “Monday Morning” as much as us?
