Ry Cuming Gets Acoustic For Idolator

Ry Cuming grew up surfing in the small Australian town of Angourie, and he made a life altering choice when he decided to take his acoustic guitar with him for a surfing trip to Costa Rica. In a moment even too surreal for the movies, Ry was discovered while strumming his guitar to a small crowd that stopped to listen to him play. From there, it was off to LA, and though Ry still surfs every single day, making music has become the primary focus in his life.

Ry was kind enough to drop by our Hollywood offices on his birthday to give us an intimate performance of two songs (“Some Kind Of Love” and “Always Remember Me”) from his new self-titled EP before taking off to enjoy a special birthday surf in Malibu.

Ry’s music is a special blend of soul and pop; think Jack Johnson and Marvin Gaye giving birth to a child who was then raised by Jeff Buckley. The Aussie crooner’s tunes like “Always Remember Me” and “Some Kind Of Love” are soft, sentimental and full of longing; while tunes like “Tearing Me Apart” is angst that’s been funkdefied. We’re not sure how Cuming will get his daily oceanic fix when he goes on tour to open for Maroon 5 this summer, but perhaps he’ll find new joy in crowd surfing.

We’re sure if he performs a version “Always Remember Me” that’s anything like this on tour, the ladies will have already lost their voices screaming for Ry before Maroon 5 even has a chance to take the stage.

Here’s Ry’s “Some Kind Of Love”.
