Jackie Collins’ biggest inspiration R. Kelly helped open the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa, today by singing his inspirational anthem “I Believe I Can Fly”—oops!—make that “Sign Of Victory.” New York mag’s Vulture blog notes that R. did nothing short of the following when prepping to write the song: bought books about soccer at Borders! Ran drills with the Chicago Fire team! Watched Invictus! Geez—he’s a regular De Niro. Did all that research pay off? Watch Kelly in his silver lady hood and sunglasses below and determine for yourself.

Sniff. It does bring a tear to your eye, no—what with that uplifting backing choir and all? And through these sobs we’ll now be adding Space Jam to the Netflix queue.

“Sign Of Victory” is currently available on iTunes on the Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album compilation and in single form. C’mon—you know it’s at least a better 99 cents spent than “Pregnant.”
