M.I.A. Has Trouble Steppin’ Up At HARD NYC Festival

We know lots of fans were disappointed when this year’s HARD LA music festival, headlined by M.I.A., was canceled amid security concerns. But after seeing the hubbub and surrounding her performance at HARD NYC this weekend, perhaps they weren’t missing much. Critics on hand say M.I.A. pretty much flamed out amid sound problems, rain and confusion (Throwing tequila bottles? No set list?). Maya chalked it all up to incompetent American sound guys. Was that the whole story? See the evidence for yourself.

Watch her perform “Steppin’ Up” below. (In her defense, it’s kind of a schizoid industrial track to begin with, so it’s not like anyone should be looking for crystal clear sound here). On the other hand, she doesn’t exactly come off as in command of the stage.

There’s no truth to the rumor that all fans with valid HARD NYC tickets will be offered a free serving of truffle fries.

But seriously, there is a small consolation prize for those of you who were disappointed by Ms. Arulpragasam’s performance: there’s a brassy new remix of “XXXO”, courtesy of DJ Mujava and DJ Qness, available here.
