Sara Bareilles took a cue from the Internet circa 2008-2009 and recorded a cover of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” for Billboard‘s hit-or-miss Mashup Mondays. That combination might make you scratch your head at first, but the result is one fine and snazzy jazzy tune. Listen below.

Sara Bareilles – “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

“If I’m gonna do a cover of a song, I want to completely reinterpret it,” Bareilles explained to Billboard. “It would be hard to imagine it as sort of a doo-wop-y, voice-and-piano kind of song, so I started fooling around with that on the piano, and it ended up being something super-fun.”

It’s really no wonder this track won Best Song at last year’s Grammy Awards—even as an acoustic jam or a Liza Minnelli vanity track on a bloated soundtrack, the song still manages to hold up.
