Pop singer and gay rights advocate Lady Gaga shined a very glaring spotlight on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” over the past week. But in the end, the United States Senate voted today 56-43 on the defense bill that would have lifted the ban on gays serving openly in the military—just four votes shy of brushing aside a Republican filibuster. CNN reports that Senate majority leader Harry Reid wants the Senate to take up amending the bill now, but no final vote will take place until after the November 2 congressional elections—at which point Republicans could seize control of the Senate and kill the bill altogether. Let that be a reminder to vote in November, little monsters!
