Welsh songbird Duffy, who scored a modest hit two years ago with her soulful (but antiseptic) “Mercy”, is back with a new collection of songs. And this time she’s brought the funk: the encyclopedically wise students of history The Roots provide the backbone for “Well Well Well”, Duffy’s first new single. “Why you giving me the third degree?” she asks in the new jam. At first listen, Duffy sounds loose and confident, possibly a result of her studio work with venerable songwriter Albert Hammond Sr. The new album is called Endlessly — but let’s hope we’re not waiting for it quite that long.
