We were anxiously anticipating Kanye West to tweet a response to George Bush’s weighty comments about the worst moment during his time in office, but West did one better and spoke at length about it to Houston’s hip-hop radio show, 97.9 The Box. Indicative of the new leaf the rapper has said to have turned since the imfamous VMA incident, Kanye explained that he can “definitely understand” the former President’s hurt feelings of being called a racist. Listen to his radio interview, in which he talks about Taylor Swift yet again, by jumping below.

“I definitely can understand the way he feels to be accused of being a racist in any way, because the same thing happened to me,” says Kanye. “I was accused of being racist.”

“With both situations it was a lack of compassion that America saw in that situation. For him, it was a lack of compassion for not… taking the time to rush down to New Orleans. With me, it was a lack of compassion with cutting somebody off in their moment.”

West continues: “I think we’re all quick to pull a race card in America. And now, I’m more open… I’m feeling more connect with him on a humanitarian level.” Color us surprised how empathetic he is!

Listen to the whole interview here — and did you ever expect ‘Ye to take Bush’s side?
