We understand why pop stars love nodding to Madonna in their tracks and music videos — she’s released a hell of a lot of videos and songs, most of them not only good, but incredibly iconic, and sometimes it’s just easier to take a good idea already established in public consciousness and call it an “homage” than coming up with a completely original concept. Latest example: Beth Ditto, frontwoman of indie pop outfit Gossip, takes a cue from Madge’s “Justify My Love” and Truth Or Dare doc for the clip to her vid, “I Wrote The Book”.

It’s not that we don’t like Ditto — we do — or her song, or even how this video turned out. But pop stars channeling Madonna is getting as old as R&B artists who emulate Michael Jackson’s dance moves and wardrobe.

Maybe this vid dropped on us at an ill opportune time, as the hubbub on Gaga’s”Born This Way” being an “Express Yourself” rip-off is still fresh. (Even Gaga’s still talking about it.) But please, pop stars, find another muse. Or, better yet, let your imagination run wild and create something new, because we don’t need yet another reminder that Madonna is worthy of our admiration and respect.
