In early May, Roc Nation rapper and Bonnaroo performer J. Cole tweeted out some major hype concerning his major label debut: “All singles done. Album ridiculous. Title Perfect. Music incredible. Thank you for your patience. Let’s change the game.” Though we still have yet to hear the LP’s perfect title, the artist is slowly giving us a taste of his “incredible” music. Jump below to his lead single “Work Out”, as well as another new track, “Cheer Up”.

J. Cole – “Work Out”

Sings J Cole on his single: “Hey, we got a good thing, don’t know if Imma see you again /But is that a good thing? Cause girl I can’t be your man, no ma’am / I know what’s on your brain, you’re probably hoping never would end / Like is it the real thing, or is it just a one night stand… well then.”

The tune comes off like a soul song assisted by the likes of Daft Punk or N.E.R.D, but mostly, it takes cues from Kanye West, as it samples Yeezy’s The College Dropout single “The New Workout Plan”. The rapper’s previously surfaced tune “Disgusting” also reminded us of West (particularly his track “So Appalled”), but this one is a lot less disgusting to our ears.

Another song rumored to be on Cole’s debut LP surfaced on the net — take a listen to the unfinished version of “Cheer Up”:

On this one, the artist is feeling a bit more mopey, having to get “high to fight the lows” as he mulls over his life’s choices. He also gives some pretty great advice: “Get your ass off of Twitter, you could be somebody.”

Are J. Cole’s latest musical offerings making you feel cheerful, or does he need to work it out a bit more? Tell us below.
