Colbie Caillat And Common Sing Your “Favorite Song”

Dear Song Of The Summer Selection Committee: Stop what you’re doing! Put down your votes! We have a late-minute candidate into this so far Lady Gaga-dominated race, and her name is Colbie Caillat. Yes, the patron saint of sunshine and sandal anthems has tossed her floppy beach hat into the ring, and her platform is simple: She wants to be your favorite song.

With a sweetly strummed guitar groove, charming reliance on la la’s and woo-hoo’s, and riding-in-a-car-with-the-top-down rhythm, “Favorite Song” (off All Of You, out July 12) is instantly recognizable as a Colbie Caillat hit-in-the-making. Common — who’s gearing up to release The Dreamer, The Believer next fall — lends a little hip-hop credibility to the track, offering three rhymed verses plus a little sing-song help later on. Between “Favorite Song” and “Brighter Than The Sun,” Colbie has all your summer party playlists covered.

The song is, of course, a metaphor for wanting to be the object of someone’s affection. Colbie sings, “I’ll be the thing that you want to sing back / Stuck in your head like I knew you would.” See, there’s this guy she likes and she wants him to like her back. But — hello! — it’s still a song about a song that’s trying to get stuck in your head. As far as declarations of intent go, it doesn’t get much clearer than that.

So does “Favorite Song” win Colbie and Common the 2011 Song Of The Summer crown? Cast your vote on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments below.
