Now in its 40th week on Billboard‘s Top 200 album chart, Adele’s 21 has finally slipped out of the Top 5 for the first time (down to #7). But no matter — the ailing London powerhouse earned six Grammy nominations last week, which prompted her to dash out a gratitude-filled blog post on her official site. 21 also racked up a new crowning achievement in the UK this week. In addition to “Rolling In The Deep” picking up Grammy nods for Record and Song Of The Year, 21 earned an Album Of The Year nomination.

On Saturday, Adele wrote the following on her site:

“Just home from New York, that’s my main excuse for not posting a message sooner, but I’m also completely and utterly lost for words. A couple days after finally being able to talk again I’m pretty speechless. Thank you so much to the academy for nominating this record for 6 Grammys!!! This has been the best year as it is but to end 2011 with this incredible achievement and honour is beyond anything I can express. Thank you to every single person who has taken a shining to this record, for making it have such an impact, this record has taken on a life of its own thanks to you. I made the record and you’ve made it what’s its become.”

21 is already the year’s best-selling album in the States, with nearly five million copies sold. But in her home country, Adele’s sophomore LP has now surpassed Amy Winehouse’s 2006 LP Back In Black as the top seller of the 21st Century so far. (Remember, it’s only been out for 10 months!)

The Official Charts Company reports that Back To Black has sold a total of 3.3 million copies in the UK, while 21 just surpassed it with 3.4 million.

In addition to the US and UK, Adele’s sophomore album has spent time at the #1 position on charts around the world this year, including ones in Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland and Switzerland.
