Watch Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” Video

Though she was a little too late to make our Song Of The Summer poll, New York singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey can certainly claim to have made one of the seasons biggest splashes with her droopy but dramatic viral hit “Video Games”. It’s a pop curveball that finds Del Rey (formerly Lizzy Grant) drowsily considering the joys and sorrows of pleasing her presumably Playstation- or Xbox-obsessed partner. Watch the vintage-style video below.

“Swinging in the backyard / Pull up in your fast car / Whistling my name,” she sings with perfectly smoky sultriness and a touch of old-school cool. “Open up a beer / And you say get over here / And play a video game.” The accompanying video is a mash-up of Instagram-style vintage footage, pop culture touchstones (an iPod billboard?) and paparazzi video. Somewhere in here there’s a comment on modern relationships. Maybe.

Do her husky, detached vocals remind you of anyone? (Yes, we’re itching for new Fiona Apple songs too). But Del Rey has absolutely earned her moment in the summer sun. If “Video Games” is an indication of her latest direction, we’re ready to pick up a controller and play along.
