American Idol‘s Season 2 champ Ruben Studdard spent the last half off 2011 sadly going through a divorce from his wife of four years. But the Velvet Teddy Bear is turning his sorrow into song with “June 28th (I’m Single)”, a new track from his fifth studio album, Letters From Birmingham, due March 11. “June 28th” refers to the date of their wedding, and “I’m Single” referring to Ruben’s relationship status just a few years later. Listen below — and Katy Perry, know that someone out there shares your pain.

The tune is simultaneously desperate, catchy, honest and altogether hilarious, particularly with lines like, “Ladies, I’m single / So when you see me on the street, don’t be scared to speak / Imma need another lady”. This could easily be an R. Kelly song.
