Lady Gaga Lashes Out After ‘NME’ Calls ‘Born This Way’ Pretentious

Guess Lady Gaga won’t be sitting down for an NME interview again anytime soon? Less than a year after the “You And I” singer graced the cover of the UK rock journal, the publication has compiled its list of The 10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever. Coming in at the top of the heap: Born This Way. As you can imagine, this has left Gaga tweetin’ mad. “What makes a pretentious album? A groan-inducing concept, lots of highfalutin waffle, and a ridiculous cover. If you’re lucky you get all three at once,” declares NME in its compilation of the “worst” offenders. Some other LPs that had the dishonor of making the list: Lou Reed and Metallica’s Lulu (#3), KISS’ Music From ‘The Elder’ (#7), Smashing Pumpkins’ Machina/The Machines Of God (#9).

As for Gaga’s album itself, here’s what NME had to say:

“For a while Gaga was the most exciting pop star on the planet. Then on Born This Way she seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced that she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy ‘anthems’ that couldn’t mask the fact the fun had left the building. Most Pretentious Moment: The German sung ‘ScheiBe’. Did electroclash die for this?”

Not one to let the magazine get away with such blasphemy, Mother Monster tweeted the following last night: “Oh the irony of winning ‘Most Pretentious Album Ever’ from none other than NME. *eyeroll* I might laugh forever + then return to narcissism”

Geez, if Gaga gets into a spat with every single magazine that had her on their covers last year, she might not have any publications left to do interviews with.

Do you agree with NME‘s assessment of Born This Way, or was the mag completely out of line — especially after having Gaga on the cover a mere 10 months ago?
