Lil Wayne On Why He Yanked Nicki Minaj From Summer Jam: “She’s Female”

Nicki Minaj‘s abrupt exit from Summer Jam ended up causing a pretty entertaining back-and-forth between the “Starships” diva and Peter Rosenberg, who slighted the single for not being “real hip hop.” (It’s part of a larger conversation about whether or not Nicki Minaj’s poppier songs mean she’s selling out.) The whole thing got blown out of proportion once Nicki responded that Rosenberg had “fucked up history.” Now Lil Wayne chimes in to explain why he pulled Young Money from the roster — because Nicki Minaj is female? (Well, at least some of her personalities are.)

While you can’t fault Weezy for standing up for womankind, Rosenberg’s attack wasn’t personal and had nothing to do with her gender. Maybe it wasn’t the wisest thing to say given Nicki’s scheduled appearance, but is it so terrible that a DJ voice his opinion on a song? “Starships” never seemed like an attempt to be “real hip hop” anyway (it’s clearly a dance/pop song), so Rosenberg’s assessment seems correct.

Oh well. Clearly Weezy stands by his decision, and it’s nice that he’s looking out for Nicki and his other artists. But let’s not be too sensitive, guys, okay?
