Skyscraper Demi Lovato is lighting up the pages of SELF magazine. In the health mag’s August issue, the Greek Theatre performer poses on the beach in an all-American summer spread, holding a surfboard, a boogie board and even giving the camera the peace sign while wearing a patriotic jean jacket. The newest X Factor judge answered fan questions about everything from her bipolar disorder to her struggles with body image. Below read what the Unbroken artist had to say.

On speaking out about her eating disorder: “… I want girls to know that it’s OK when they grow up and their body changes. I want them to be aware that certain things they might do to lose weight can be dangerous—life-threatening, even.”

On being diagnosed as bipolar: “I had a real emotional disorder helped me put together the pieces of the puzzle…When I got diagnosed, my life made more sense.”

On some of her new approaches to life’s stresses: “…I haven’t used my cell in three months! Subconsciously, it was a crutch. When a room gets quiet, what do you do? Grab your phone! Now I can sit and have conversations with people.”

On getting support from friends:“…I surround myself with people who make positive decisions and who have more interests than wanting to go to clubs and get wasted.”
