Beastie Boys Sue Monster Energy Drink For Using Their Music
The Beastie Boys will fight for their right to protect their music. The group is suing Monster Energy Corp. for illegally using several of their songs in a series of ads, against the wishes of the trio’s late member, Adam “MCA” Yauch.
Yauch, who died in May after a long bout with cancer, stipulated in his will that his image and music could not be used for advertising purposes. His wife, Dechen Yauch, has the right to sell and manage his artistic property, as long as his music and image not be used for commercial use.
Monster’s 2012 Ruckus in the Rockies promo video appeared on the company’s website in May 2012, and used Beastie songs like “Sabotage,” “So What’cha Want” and “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun.” Mike D, Ad-Rock and the estate of Yauch are seeking unspecified damages, alleging copyright infringement and a host of other intellectual property violations.
